Spelling tests will not begin until the end of October after the first 9 weeks is complete.
Spelling tests take place on the last day of the week (usually a Friday). Students will review spelling words in class but are encouraged to also practice them at home.
Spelling Lists can be found on the First Grade Newsletter.
These are some research-approved ways for your student to practice and learn their spelling words:
Write words using different tools, such as...
Different colored crayons or pencils ('rainbow' write)
Paint
Play-Doh
Write words on different surfaces or textures, such as:
Salt/sand/rice
Soap/shaving cream
On the carpet
Be active!
Do jumping jacks, jump rope, clap, etc. as you spell each letter in the word (Example: "with = W-I-T-H")
Do a cheerleader chant (Give me an ‘A’…..’A’)
Spell out words by making each letter's shape with your body
Be creative!
Create a riddle or joke about a word (Example: I am a four-letter word that means a big boat. Answer: ship)
Create a list of words that rhyme with your spelling words
Make a dictionary using spelling words and add new words each week
