Middle School

Middle School: All students grades five through eight are required to take a general music class each year. Classes meet every day on a quarter basis for approximately fifty, forty minute periods.

The Middle School curriculum is designed as an extension of the elementary curriculum. Students will continue to explore the basic elements of music including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, dynamics, and lyrics. Students will also create, notate and perform music using voice, and various melodic, rhythmic and electronic instruments. Through listening and discussion, middle school students will study a basic repertoire of major composers, compositions, and the historical development of such music. They will also study the development of American Popular Music, and the musicians and technology responsible for its development. We hope that each student will be able to demonstrate an increased awareness of music as an important part of their history, culture, and every day life.
