Learning Disabilities Pre-reading Webquest
Task: Complete each of the activities on a sheet of notebook paper. Title your work. Label each activity separately.
Learning Disability (n):
a disorder, such as dyslexia, usually affecting school-age children of normal or above-normal intelligence, characterized by difficulty in understanding or using spoken or written language, and thought to be related to impairment or slowed development of perceptual motor skills.
Activity 1: One of the recurring themes from the novel Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, is how people can overcome challenges. The main character, Max, has a learning disability, but he ends up writing his own novel. What exactly is a learning disability? What types of learning disabilities do students deal with? Write a paragraph, summarizing your findings.

Activity 2: Everyone knows it’s wrong to tease another because of his/her race, religion or culture. So, why is it ok to call someone “retarded” or make fun of the way a person moves? Visit the following site to learn about how some students feel about having a learning disability. Write a well-developed paragraph discussing your opinion and research.
