156B Week 4
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
CAD of bucket design is in development
CAD of counterweight racking system is in development
complete analysis of system should be ready by 5/9/20
will begin component selection after analyses are complete, also by 5/9/20
Bill of Materials and refined component analysis set to be completed by 6/6/20
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Completed dynamic simulation of model and used for design decisions to make the arm 1m long and to implement the swinging bucket design
Began CAD modelling of the counterweight racking system and the swinging bucket arm
Outlined specific modelling tasks for each group member and timeline for the next three weeks to ensure that deadlines are met
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Revise current CAD (Peter)
Finish bucket design CAD (Nicholas)
Finish counterweight racking CAD (Clara)
Analyses for upcoming week:
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsors were unable to meet with us this week, so we had an internal meeting and sent them slides of our design updates (attached below)
Polycarbonate is a now viable option for the protective enclousre (Twyman, email, 4/22/20)
The CubeLab files we have now are for the largest box that will be used (Twyman, email, 4/22/20)
Upper error of +/- 7% is acceptable, arm length of 1m is fine (Twyman, email, 4/22/20)
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Presented results of dynamic simulation and confirmed equations of motion with Dr. Ghazinejad (4/21/20, in person), leading to confirmation of bucket design and arm length
Mentioned needing a vector diagram to more clearly explain acceleration derivation (4/21/20, in person)
Need to plot 1st and 2nd derivatives of theta to make sure discontinuities/other issues do not interfere with machine operation (4/21/20, in person)
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Some relevant comments from Design Proposal Presentation: (4/14/20, received the following week)
Some of the slides have too much content on them, so it's difficult to both read and listen
Can explain the design decision better. More images to explain will be better. Did not talk about safety which was supposed to an important requirement.
Could've had more specific tasks in Gantt chart
Key Design Decisions slide was really wordy
Maybe explain further the "water bucket" design for the centrifuge
Provide more technical drawings to show components involved
Could have added more CAD pictures to show components
More description of the analysis
I was a bit confused on the state of the project. Your parntnership/sponsorship could be a bit more explained
Risks and Areas of Concern
Analyses will need to be confirmed before components are selected
