156A Week 10
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Juan's component analysis: Stepper motor
Ganesha's component analysis: Turning rotary motion into linear motion
Chikeng's component analysis: Magnetic actuation
Pedro's component analysis: Bio-compatible batteries
Risk reduction topic: How much torque is required to translate the rotary to linear motion system and stretch the nerve?
Accomplishments from Previous Week
updated website and completed Gantt chart
completed UC trainings required by sponsor
component analysis of stepper motor is almost complete
began working on the risk reduction presentation
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Completing Risk Reduction Presentation
Completing Component Analysis
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsor could not meet with us because he was busy.
He sent us two research papers to go over- begain going over papers
He sent us a couple of UCSD lab trainings to complete - began going through training
He introduced us to current MAE 156 nerve lengthening team - asked previous team questions about their design
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
we should look into the process of changing rotary motion into linear motion - that is now one of our component analysis topics
for the risk reduction, we should focus on something simple initially - decided to do motor analysis required for nerve lengthening
we need to present a draft risk reduction presentation on Monday - began putting together this draft presentation
make sure to follow specific presentation requirements that Prof. Gillett specified - took these into account for the draft presentation
Comments from Other Students in the Class and instructor (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Presentation was too long
Slides had too many words
Hard to grasp length scale of project
Go into less detail and talk more about the bigger picture
Risks and Areas of Concern
will the actuator have enough torque to stretch the nerve and maintain the elongation through the 20 mm desired stretch?
will the heat generated by the motor be low enough that it won't damage the surrounding tissue of the patient?
will the nerve system be bio-compatible and be easily installed during surgery in a way that minimizes infection?
are magnetic fields harmful to patient? (for magnetic actuation)
is actuator stable and will it ensure that nerves are not stretched beyond 20% strain?
Resources or Information Required but not Available
what are the material properties of the nerve?
what is the tension force from the nerve acting against the actuator?
how much heat would damage the surrounding tissue?
Schedule
Meet with sponsor at Tuesday 03/12 at 8:45 am at office
