Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Circuit complete except for motion sensor - new sensor on the way
Halogen bulbs and motion sensor on order
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Thermal simulation clarified and verified with sponsors and instructor
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Experimentally determine temperature gradient and power requirements for halogen bulbs heating various locations on glass (Thomas)
Continued work on circuit testing and code (including motion sensor) (Jason)
Analysis of thermoelectric modules and design for the "pen" finalized (Inri)
Design and assembly of the box and the hand-lifting mechanism (Naif)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsor comments from 4/19 in person meeting: sponsors introduced a laser and optics consultant
Focal heating location: a 1 degree difference between locations isn't significant for the experiment
Experimental data to be determined in order to support this
Glass is a good insulator and spreads heat around well, consider using copper or sapphire (consultant)
Sapphire is considered for use on the final stages of the design, but for this quarter we will continue to use glass
Skepticism on the halogen bulbs (especially for quick cooling after the test), suggestions of thermoelectric/peltier module instead
Halogen bulbs will still be used for preliminary testing, peltier modules may be used for the proof-of-concept
A new "pen" design with thermoeletrics
Design overhaul/redesign is being considered
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Instructor comments from 4/18 in person meeting
Consider using lead glass for minimal spread of heat
Lead glass being planned for proof-of-concept, current glass used for testing
Consider using a through-sensor for motion detection
Garage-door style motion sensor on order
Get the temperature profile on the glass for focal heating
Thermal simulation adjusted to show the profile
Experimental determination of the temperature profiles will be finished by next week
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
If the pen design is pursued, the comment from another student about ultrasonic motion sensors last week might be worth re-investigating
