Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
In the progress of doing feedback control on pump speed (Teng)
Finish building serial communication between pump and MATLAB webcam support package (Kimi)
In the progress of writing image processing code (Kimi)
Finish the redesign of the treadmill system and order all necessary parts (Kimi)
Determining ideal diffuser design (Damien)
Completed plankton-like object and water density analysis (Yuling)
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Achieved pump speed control through RS485 communication (Teng)
Build serial communication between Logitech camera and MATLAB (Kimi)
Finish the redesign of the treadmill system (Kimi)
Performed full analysis of Comsol data (Damien)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Calculate the proportional gain for p-control (Teng)
Finish building the hardware after receive parts (Kimi)
Keep working on image processing code and start make GUI (Kimi)
Successfuly run finer Comsol sim for diffuser design (Damien)
Investigate reverse flow options with open water tank, pressure analysis (Damien)
Complete machine shop pieces and possibly complete the assembly (Yuling)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Remove glass from treadmill system and put camera in the back (Kimi)
Might need to deal with buoyant plankton (Kimi)
Make the water tank level high than the highest position of the water chamber
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Instructor suggested to use analog voltage control and to talk to Steve Roberts (Teng)
Actions taken:
Talked to Steve Roberts about control methods, and he suggested that RS485 was easy to use and taught us the idea behind RS485 communication
Followed the protocol from the pump company and successfully enabled pump control using Matlab
Use RTV and O-ring to prevent the leaking (Kimi)
Put coating on 3D printed part to make it watertight (Kimi)
Research on material with a similar density of water (Kimi)
Suggested talking to Ian Richardson re: Comsol
Ian did not have higher capacity computer
Contacted ACMS, they have set up 32 GB Linux system to remotely access -- having issues (Damien)
suggested on fish egg sink rate and use plastic balls as plankton-like object (Yuling)
Tested the sink rate of fish egg is 30mm/s. Will use Nylon 6/6.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Risks and Areas of Concern
Creating objects with correct buoyancy for similar sinking velocity to plankton
5% Velocity gradient -- currently not met
Control Algorithm if beyond P-Control
