Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Analysis
1. Buoy and Line displacements and drag model was found in published Navy literature (Mike and Katherine)
- Buoy dynamics model will be simulated on MATLAB using this article as a referece
2. Power requirement analysis is being done based on specifications of electronics (Mike and Katherine)
- Set up Arduino Pro Mini to measure drawn current in various power states
Design
1. Microcontroller considerations are being made based on energy requirements and ease of use
2. Circuit components are being selected with power-saving requirements in mind
Fabrication
1. Assemble pressure housing with Ikelite Shaft Seal Gland (Alvin and Matthew)
Testing
1. Test Ikelite gland (Matthew and Alvin)
We'll be receiving two of these sometime early next week
Should probably speak to someone about testing this
2. Test line release system (All)
Three testing rigs have been assembled
Various different types of line aquired
Accomplishments from Previous Week
PVC was acquired for float and pressure housing (Alvin and Matthew)
Preliminary T-float and pressure housing were constructed (Alvin and Matthew)
Anti-foul testing items were constructed (Alvin and Matthew)
Unspooling testing items were constructed (Mike and Katherine)
Various prototyping electronics components were acquired (Katherine)
C-spray antifouling solution was ordered (Mike)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Tests
1. Line Unspooling Test (20-Apr-2015)
Determine characteristics of line based on diameter
Determine direction for spool design
2. Waterproofing Housing Test (TBD)
Deliverables
1. Buoy and line fluid analysis (Mike and Katherine)
Create a simulation in MATLAB
Test
2. Power analysis (Mike and Katherine)
Construct preliminary circuit
Set up meeting with Steve Roberts
Determine battery requirements
3. Waterproofed pressure housing (Alvin and Matthew)
Install motor with preliminary electronics components
Test two different methods of waterproofing the vessel
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsor provided an underwater camera for the purpose of documentation of tests (17-Apr-2015 in meeting)
The camera will be used to document the unspooling test and pressure housing test
Sponsor indicated interest in pursuing RF testing (17-Apr-2015 in meeting)
Sponsor recommended sending a draft of the Proof of Concept Presentation for review (17-Apr-2015 in meeting)
Sponsor provided an example of a unit with a basic spool to contain the line and machined anti-rotation tabs (17-Apr-2015 in meeting)
Sponsor emphasized performing power requirements analysis and buoy dynamics analysis (17-Apr-2015 in meeting)
These two analyses have been given priority
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Instructor suggested consulting Parker O-Ring Handbook (13-Apr-2015 in meeting)
Parker O-Ring Handbook has been referenced in selection of o-rings.
Instructor indicated that finer wire will be more prone to tangle (13-Apr-2015 in meeting)
The unspooling test will feature wires of various diameters to determine how it affects tendency to tangle
Instructor emphasized that biofouling will be a concern especially if the line spool is exposed (13-Apr-2015 in meeting)
The design of the unit will minimize direct exposure of the line to open ocean so as to minimize the effect of fouling

Risks and Areas of Concern
The power requirements will necessitate choosing the best MCU and battery to design a spatially efficient circuit assembly
The buoy dynamics analysis will indicate a minimum buoy size and corresponding wire diameter which must have the proper breaking strength necessary for this application
