Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Bearing Assembly
Redesigned bearing housing to swivel on dowel pins and a one piece housing mount
Considering on altering the bearing assembly based on what the NSK application engineer has to say about our current design
About to finish design and start ordering parts
Motor Assembly
Support Frame/Load Frame
Finalized the support frame design during CDR
Determined prices of new design
Created new cad for these designs
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Bearing Assembly (Jerry)
Consulted with SKF bearing manufacturer about our bearing application
A SKF application engineer did not have interest in helping with our design and insisted that our application
The bearing and adapter will work with any bearing
Consulted with NSK bearing manufacturer about our bearing application
A NSK application engineer was interested in helping out
Sent images of our design and bearing application, feedback will be received Monday (4/23)
Received quotes from two distributors in San Diego on self-aligning bearings (SA), spherical roller bearings (SR) and bearing sleeve adapters
BDI quoted:
SA bearing price = $209.00, lead time = 3 working days
SR bearing price = $152.73, lead time = 22 working days
Adapter price = $43.50, lead time = 3 working days
Kaman Industrial Technologies
SA bearing price = $282.71, lead time = UPS standard shipping
SR bearing price = $196.00, lead time = UPS standard shipping
Adapter price = $49.16, lead time = UPS standard shipping
Gave a CDR (critical design review) at ATA for our sponsor, fellow company engineers, and the end user of our project
Got great feedback on the final design and incorporated suggested design considerations
Final design got the green flag to purchase parts when its ready
Motor Assembly
· Redesigned motor mount to increase reliability and reduce cost.-Brandon
· Calculated which speed controller needed for the AC motor -Brandon
· Figured out how to implement auto shut off of motor once test article fails- Brandon
· Spoke with techs from automationdirect about which controller would best suit our needs/chose speed controller- Brandon
Support Frame & Load Frame
Performed a CDR and finilized the design got approval to order parts when ready.
Created a cad for finalized design- sergio and Jorge
Went to General Steel corp. to determine price of C Chanels from their scrap metal - Sergio and Jorge
Got quote for C channel cost: $ 195.65 - Sergio Jorge
Got quote for an alluminum plate at general steel corp. about 200.00 - Jorge
Looked through the scrap metal at the ucsd machine shop to avoid spending so much money. - sergio Jorge
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Bearing Assembly
Determine best bearing application, by custom bearing housing or another solution suggested by NSK application engineer
If we decide to not go with potential solution:
Gather at least two or three more quotes on SKF bearings and adapters for current design - Jerry
Update design to include an interface between bearing assembly and th as well as a simple feasibility analysis on bearing housing assembly - Jerry
Create a Bill of Materials for the bearing assembly - Jerry
Start drafting up what parts of the bearing housing needs to be machined and fabricated - Jerry
If we decide to go with potential solution:
Gather more information on the feasibility of the application - Jerry
CAD up the changed design and add to final assembly - Jerry
Get quotes on the product and related accessories - Jerry
Motor Assembly
Order controller, ac motor and pulleys - Brandon
Redesign pulleys for new motor/ motor mount design - Brandon
Support Frame
Show new part prices to sponcer and get them approved - Sergio
Order parts and start building - Sergio
Load Frame
Show new part prices to sponcer and get them approved - Jorge
Order parts and start building - Jorge

Our team mostly have been contacting our sponsor daily through email about our progress and getting frequent feedback in our design decisions. Below is an email from our sponsor following our CDR.
Greg Mathy - 04/17/2012
"Guys,
I CADed some of the recommendations we were thinking of yesterday. I think that the sizing of the members is appropriate (the angles, C channel, square tube, and plate).
I’ll keep thinking about this, and you guys should too, but I think this is a good start."
· Updated the support frame and load frame on the overall assembly
· Chose which materials to consider purchasing

Risks and Areas of Concern
Custom bearing housing feasibility
Press fitting the bearing
Sealed bearing misalignment can cause failure
The sealed bearings are not meant to take any misalignment (only up to +/- 0.5 degrees)
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Current bearing application feasibility, awaiting
Schedule
Start purchasing
Update Gantt chart.
