Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Design
Drive System
We currently have 3 designs undergoing consideration categorized by the type of drive system for rotating the test article. Each design are being weighed on their components' pricing and availability as well as pros and cons.
Friction Drive
The test article rests upon 4 support rollers, 2 on each end. One of the rollers will be fixed to the output shaft of the electric motor which will rotate the test article.
Lathe Chuck Drive (Idea will be scrapped)
A lathe chuck will clamp to one end of the test article and rotate it. The lathe chuck will have a black plate adapter connected to a drive shaft supported by a ball bearing. The drive shaft will be coupled to the output shaft of the electric motor by a flexible shaft coupling.
Belt Drive
A flat belt will wrap around the test article at one end and a sheave or pulley connected to the electric motor's output shaft.
Load Frame
There are two types of load frames that have been considered.
Contact Rollers
The load frame will house 4 contact rollers. Each pair of contact rollers will rest on top of the test article and apply a downward load.
Concentric Bearings
The test article will fit concentrically in the bore of each bearing. The bearing will be mounted on a load frame that will provide the proper loading.
Analysis
For the contact roller load frame and friction drive, a Femap analysis is underway to understand how well the test article will hold up under contact stresses when subjected to load.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Found locking assembly device as a means to fasten the shaft to the spherical bearings (later scrapped idea to reduce costs) - Jerry
Found mounted spherical roller bearings with a built in locking devices such as a concentric locking collar, setscrew, pop release collar, and clamping ring. To be used in the Concentric Bearing Load frame design - Jerry
Modeled the lathe chuck drive with the concentric bearing design on Solidworks to present to sponsor - Jerry
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.

Upcoming Milestones
Finalize Design (4/5) : One of the three design considerations need to be selected, CAD modeled, parts chosen, parts list show, cost analysis, and much more
Critical Design Review (4/5): The final design review before given the green flag to order parts and begin manufacturing phase of development.
