Background
ATA Engineering is an engineering consulting company involved with fatigue testing and analysis of various structures. ATA Engineering requires a fatigue tester in order to validate analytical solutions and provide new material testing data for various structures. The fatigue testing apparatus must be able to produce fatigue life results similar to other rotating fatigue test rigs, but on a much larger test article.
Objective
The functional requirements for the project were:
● Design fatigue testing apparatus for a cylinder with a diameter of 5.08 cm (2 inches)
● Fatigue testing apparatus must be able to produce 207 MPa (30 ksi) of stress on test article
● Apparatus must be able to count the number of cycles until failure
● Apparatus must be safe and reliable since it will have to run unsupervised for extended periods of time.
● Apparatus must also be capable of spinning test article above 63.8 rad/s (600 rpm).
● Apparatus must be able to shut off automatically once test article has approached fatigue limit.
● Apparatus must be able to spin test article at different speeds.

Fatigue Tester Final Design
Our fatigue testing apparatus secures a cylindrical tube concentrically through 4 bearings that induce a 4 point bending by a load frame. An electric motor rotates the tube by a belt and pulley system. Lastly, the number of tube revolutions are recorded until the tube begins to fracture.
