York HS Symphony Orchestra Concerto/Aria Auditions - Application and info for 2021-2022

Auditions are Tuesday, September, 14, 2021 after school.

Applications (pdf attached below) are due Thursday, August 26, 2021

    • Auditions will be in person at York Tuesday, September 14, 2021, starting after 3:30 PM, ending around 5:30 or 6:00.

    • The competition is open to junior and senior strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano and voice students enrolled in a York performing ensemble.

    • * You will need to submit two copies of your music (not the accompanist’s part) with this application.

      • (note: for pianists and vocalists, of course, your part always includes the accompaniment)

    • It is your responsibility, along with your private teacher, to select a work that has a published, available accompaniment for string or full orchestra that is playable by our York Symphony. You are encouraged to contact Mr. Ostwald with questions about appropriate pieces, difficulty, movements, cuts or length.

    • Length of your selection: Instrumentalists generally should perform one movement of a standard concerto, and singers one recitativo & aria or the equivalent. Some unique single-movement pieces or works with several very short movements are exceptions. If in doubt, contact Mr. Ostwald prior to the audition to discuss options. (Email is best during summer)

    • Perform your work as you would with an orchestra, complete with cadenzas (if appropriate). Your piano accompanist may, of course, cut lengthy orchestral introductions or interludes in the audition.

    • Dress up appropriately for the audition; this shows respect for the music, the judges and your art.

    • Winner or winners, if selected, will perform accompanied by the York Symphony if possible.
