COURSE CONTENT: Preliminary Course
Core Module A: Pregnancy and Childbirth
Introduces the physical and emotional demands of the mother during pregnancy and childbirth, implication for the father and other family members.
Key syllabus points include; Pregnancy, tests required during pregnancy, the developing baby, preparing for birth, labour and birth, postnatal issues,
and contemporary issues.
Core Module B: Child Growth and Development
Development of the child from birth to the end of childhood years focussing on caring for the child, diversity of children, families and culture.
Key syllabus points include; Physical growth and motor development, socio-emotional, cognitive and language development and the importance of family.
Core Module C: Promoting Positive Behaviour
Students will gain an understanding of child behaviour at different stages of development and become familiar with strategies to promote positive
behaviours and interactions of children.
Key syllabus points include; realistic expectations, age appropriate behaviour, positive strategies, behaviour management, fostering autonomy
and independence, responsibilities and obligations of parents.
Optional Modules: Students would complete ONE of these.
