Quality Accurate Assessments

The assessment library highlights the four major components of quality assessments. These are: Purpose, Outcomes, Design, and Feedback. To learn more about each component, read the article, The Quest for Quality, by Stephen Chappuis, Jan Chappuis, and Rick Stiggins. We have linked a protocol that can be used as a group to help stimulate thinking about the four quality components of assessment.

The assessment calculator reflection questions can be seen at this link.

Assessment Triangle

The Assessment Triangle provides a framework for educators to reflect on the alignment of the assessment's purpose, design, and interpretation strategies used.

• “Cognition” or “Purpose and Outcomes” - What do we want our students to learn? What are the key learning outcomes of this unit/backward plan?

• “Observations” or “Design” - What are we asking students to do? What is the task? What is the process along the way? Does all the key learnings need to be

assessed in the summative assessment, or are there other assessment opportunities that are more appropriate? For example: Could the content or particular skill be assessed summatively in an interim task?

• “Interpretation” or “Feedback” - How will you know if students have learned what was intended? What scoring mechanisms will be used? Who will score?

How will you involved students in the process?
