District 219 Internet Safety Lesson

Description

This lesson is designed to increase student awareness of social networking. The primary objective of this lesson is to equip students with knowledge that will enable them to make responsible choices regarding the use of social networks found on the Internet.

This lesson is comprised of two key elements:

1. The video delivered via District 219's Flash Video Server.

2. Optional discussions at the conclusion of each video facilitated by the instructor.

Learning Objective

The objective of this lesson enable students to:

• Safely interact on-line using social networks.

• Understand potential consequences of on-line posting.

Lesson Procedures

Introductory discussion (optional)

Ask students to define a user profile. A user profile is information made available to viewers which establishes a user's identity, these often contain content such as likes and dislikes, hobbies, and activities. Ask students to identify what type of information does not belong on a profile page? Personally identifying information such as name, address and phone numbers do not belong on profile pages.

Synopsis of Video

The video addresses the concept of profiles. Social network profiles are defined and described. The video continues on to provide an overview of safe social networking practices as they apply to the Internet.

Question 2: Can you identify some consequences of posting questionable content on a social network?
