District 219 Internet Safety Lesson
Description
This lesson is designed to increase student awareness of the concept of cyber privacy.
This lesson is comprised of two key elements:
The video delivered via the Internet (Runtime 3:30).
Optional directed discussions at the conclusion of each video for the students facilitated by the instructor.
Learning Objectives
The objectives of this lesson enable students to:
Implement security and protections while online.
Recognize and avoid online “traps” which may compromise their safety and personal information.
Develop strategies to properly deal with privacy related issues.
Lesson Procedures
Introductory discussion (optional)
Introduce the topic: Inform the students they will be learning about cyber-privacy and about the steps individuals may take to protect themselves from predators.
Question 1 – Ask students to define privacy. Is privacy at home different than privacy on the Internet?
Question 2 – Ask students whether or not it is safe to respond to requests for personal information from web pages or email messages. Why or why not?

Synopsis of Video
The video addresses the concepts of cyber privacy. Cyber privacy involves protecting personal information while on the Internet. Users need to safeguard against other people stealing their information either by taking it directly off of a profile or capturing information such as credit card numbers.
Extended Discussion (optional)
Question 1: Ask students if their screen names divulge any personal information such as name, location, birthday.
Question 2: Is it wise to chat, or make purchases on public computers? Why not?
