District 219 Internet Safety Lesson

Description

This lesson is designed to raise student awareness to the risks they face while communicating online. It addresses harassment, cyber stalking, and the process of grooming, used by cyber predators to prepare their intended victims for a face-to-face meeting. The primary objective of this lesson is to educate and empower students with knowledge that will enable them to assertively protect themselves while communicating online to decrease the chance that they will be victimized online.

This lesson is comprised of two key elements:

    1. The video delivered via the Internet (Runtime ).

    2. Optional directed discussions at the conclusion of each video for the students facilitated by the instructor.

Learning Objectives

The objectives of this lesson enable students to:

    • Communicate more safely online with proactive techniques.

    • Refuse requests for information, unwanted solicitations, and requests to participate in unlawful online activities.

    • Report suspicious, unlawful, dangerous, or threatening online behavior and activities.

    • Develop strategies to inform others about how to protect themselves while communicating online.

Lesson Procedures

Introductory discussion (optional)

Introduce the topic: Inform the students they will be learning about cyber relationships and how to safely maintain relationships in cyberspace.

Question 1: Ask your students to think about incidents of sexual solicitation, online grooming, harassment, or cyber stalking.

Synopsis of Video

The video first addresses cyber relationships and tips on how to be safe while communicating online. Then online harassment is defined and the steps of the grooming process are discussed. The video ends with tips on what to do if you think you are being harassed or stalked.
