PHIL COURSE EVALS
AMERICAN LITERATURE: THE QUEST
STRENGTHS
CONTENT: He clearly loves the books (especially moby dick), and he knows what he is talking about, GREAT DISCUSSIONS. American Quest has been one of the most interesting English classes I've taken at this school IIIIIII
Phil is very organized II
CLARITY: Phil is really good at helping students when they don't understand something.
CHALLENGE: Phil is good at challenging the class. III
Phil cares about seeing growth in our writing and literary analysis. IIIII
CAPTIVATE: He is very enthusiastic about the pieces of literature we analyze IIII
CARE: he gives much of his own time meeting with us so that we can learn from our own strengths and weaknesses as writers and readers. II
He's very good about posting homework ahead of time
CONFER: Your feedback is always very good whether it be on tests, quizzes, or in class activities. always find myself learning a lot from just the feedback. I like the way we talk about the books we read in class, it really helps to truly understand how to analyze passages when I am reading by myself and it helps me understand what the writer is trying to say and trying to get at in the passages. II
CONFER: I like the way we are allowed to do essay corrections because it allows me to really learn from my mistakes and it will help me to remember these lessons because I will be the one fixing them so it is hands on which will help me to remember the mistakes and how they are supposed to be when in correct form.
CARE: He worked very well with planned absences and catching skiers up once they got back.
I appreciate that he is willing to change course when necessary for student survival (basically he understands how much work we can handle for the most part). III
SUGGESTIONS:
PACING DURING COURSE: It would be helpful to have had a bit less time on Invisible Man, and more time on the texts that we read all together. For those of us who did not read the summer reading, it made the first month of class difficult because it was not easy to catch up in such a lengthy book. Less time on All the Pretty and more time on Moby Dick. II
There does seem to be a very little amount of time spent between finishing Moby Dick and taking the final.
CAPTIVATE: Switch it up not the same thing every day
CHALLENGE: I think that at times there is too much work assigned for us. I think that sometimes we had essay corrections, a whole first draft of an essay and other work due all within the same few day span and I think that it was just too much. This happened a couple of times when we had to much work assigned in a period of time that was too short for that amount of work. II
CLARITY IN GRADING: I would like to be able to see what number grade I get on my first draft of essays and then on revisions, and how they create my final grade for the essay because I thought that some of my final grades would've been different so it'd be nice to clarify.
PACING: A suggestion for the course I have is to move at a slower pace at times and to go over hard concepts more often.
CAPTIVATE: Phil does not adhere to a diverse amount of learning styles. He tends to stick closely to the lecture and listen format of teaching and learning. It may be nice to mix things up once in awhile
CHALLENGE: Phil's quizzes, are not hard but they do take a long time to write out with so many paragraph answer. I suggest you consider that some students take longer to finish their quizzes when you are writing your quizzes. I don't think it is fair to penalize students for not finishing these long tests in just an hour. Overall, time restraints need to be thought of more carefully and understand all students are different.
CARE: I feel like it is sometimes hard to come talk to him because he seems unapproachable
PACING IN CLASS: Also it is very frustrating when we are not let out of class on time when we have commitments during activity, lunch, and jobs.
PLAN TO ENHANCE STRENGTHS
1 CONFER: Keep focus on lively, in depth discussions of the challenging texts
2 CONFER: Keep focus on comments on papers and quizzes; encourage revisions of papers and retakes of portions of quizzes
3 CARE: continue to frontload work so students away from school can manage the workload and return to class as valued members
PLAN TO ADDRESS SUGGESTIONS
1 Pacing in course: ensure that due dates are posted and adhered to throughout the term. Allow time for both writing and revisions with minimal additional work.
2 Pacing in class: ensure that there is time for exit cards for student to consolidate learning and ask questions to be answered in the next class. LET STUDENTS OUT ON TIME
3 Teaching Method Variety: be overt about different discussion methods. Allow time for student based analysis and research: pair work, jigsaws, group work.
