PATAGONIA RISING TRAILER
INTRODUCTION TO PATAGONIA RISING:
videos below
We are going to address a second pillar of the Community School mission statement: commitment to environmental stewardship.
The short documentary film addresses the potential impact of five dams on two free flowing rivers in southern Chile. The dams were approved by the Chilean government in May of 2011, but there is a movement to halt their production.
What makes the film so compelling is that it reviews not only the devastating impact the dams will have upon the rare flora and fauna of the region, but it also addresses the impact the dams would have upon the local ranching culture-the gauchos of the southern Chile region.
The film will address more environmentally sensitive and sustainable alternatives to building giant dams in the intact bioregion of Patagonia. It will review the potential of wind, solar, and geothermal alternative energy sources that would eliminate the need for the dams.
In the words of a local Chilean “we all live on the Baker River.”
