Response from SVS:
Hi, Devika and Sean,
Thank you for your message, Devika. Cool! The answers to Sudbury Valley are not available really in a few minute conversation. We always hope that people who want to learn about us will read, read, read on our website, watch youtube videos till they are coming out of their ears, and then take some time to think. We also do Open Houses occasionally so that people can talk to parents, students, staff and former students. They are announced on our website and our facebook page and all over the place. But you are not around the corner!
We don't do the kind of conversation you are looking for because we can't answer the demand for them. That sounds snobby, but trust me it isn't! Because once you start asking just the few questions you asked, we could answer for hours and hours, and also they lead to more questions. Which is why we have done so much writing. So I suggest if you are interested in the why and how of the school, you consider reading (available through our website bookstore) "And Now for Something Completely Different", and then let your curiosity lead you. Most of our books (all?) have chapters available on line, so you can see what interests you.
I think the structure of the school is of interest too. Our Sudbury Valley School Handbook has it all. Also available through the website. It seems like the inventing part is the most important part of a new school for you, and the kids involved in the inventing begin to feel like both pioneers and owners very fast, which is nice.
