CARE class is part of your child's "UA" (Unified Arts schedule) along with PE, Art, Music, and Library. CARE class is a 40-minute class taught by the school counselor, Mrs. T., and takes place in each classroom, one time per week.
The name CARE class is intentional because it highlights the core goals of school counseling in a way that is easy for students and families to remember.
Community – Students learn they are part of something bigger than themselves. CARE class helps them build a sense of belonging, teamwork, and responsibility toward themselves, their school and their local community.
Awareness – This includes self-awareness (understanding feelings, strengths, and challenges) and social awareness (empathy, respect, and appreciation of differences).
Relationships – Building healthy, positive relationships is central to student success. CARE class teaches communication, conflict resolution, problem solving and collaboration skills.
Emotions – Understanding and managing emotions is a life skill. CARE class helps students identify feelings, develop coping strategies, and build resilience.
Put together, these four areas capture the heart of what school counseling is about: caring for yourself, caring for others, and creating a safe, supportive school environment. That’s why the acronym CARE was chosen—it reminds students and staff that the class is all about learning how to care in ways that make the individual and the community stronger and healthier.
