Students will consider the original aims of Reconstruction and describe its effects on the political and social structures of the American South.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
Presidential and Congressional plans for Reconstruction.
the effects of the Freedmen’s Bureau and the restrictions placed on their rights and opportunities of freedmen, including racial segregation and “Jim Crow” laws.
the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and the Klan activity.
the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution and their connection to Reconstruction.
