Having a specific time and place for homework is helpful. Ask questions about school and encourage your kids to be active participants in their education. Junior High is a time to start taking individual responsibility in order to be ready for a potentially demanding high school experience.
Organization and Preparation
1. All students are required to use a daily planner and record the lesson for the day as well as homework. Parents can use the planner to assist students complete tasks outside of class.
2. Students should maintain an organized system for coursework. For example, all history work should be kept together in a folder or within a section of a binder. Check student backpacks from time to time to make sure all work is where it should be.
3. Students should prepare for assessments (tests) over the course of several days prior to the day of the test. Assessment dates are announced at least a week prior to the date of the test with very few exceptions.
Following Directions
Directions are given verbally, repeated many times, and most often times directions appear in writing on coursework. Students must follow directions in order to receive full credit for any assignment. Following directions is a life skill. I often, weekly, remind my students that the skill building we do together will transfer to high school, college, and the work force.
