Our Founding Fathers declared their independence from Mother England in 1776. They were inspired by the writings of Enlightenment philosophers like John Locke. Ideas expressed during The Great Awakening, a religious movement in the colonies during the 1700s, contributed to a new feeling of independence among English colonists in North America. English Parliamentary traditions also shaped the attitudes of our Founding Fathers.
