The Extended Learning Program (E.L.P.) is based upon the Autonomous Learner Model by Dr. George Betts of the University of Northern Colorado and Jolene Knapp Kirchner. In the Autonomous Learner Model, students work in five dimensions: Orientation, Individual Development, Enrichment, Seminars and In-Depth Studies. See the graphic below for more detail.
E.L.P. students will be working through all five dimensions, with an emphasis in the elementary schools on the first four dimensions. The goal of the Autonomous Learner Model -- and the goal of E.L.P. in Cedar Falls -- is to have students become lifelong independent learners; ready, willing and able to learn on their own.
