ENGLISH
Spelling and Vocabulary: Direct instruction through, workbook, Wordly Wise 3000, will occur twice a week. Vocab/Spelling lessons will occur twice a week, TR. Words and spelling pattern or principle will be introduced at the beginning of each chapter and then reinforced with each lesson. Workbook pages will be done as classwork and different creative activities using Vocab/Spelling words will be assigned for homework. We will have a class review prior to each test and students are encouraged to review words during the course of the week to keep the definitions and spelling fresh in their minds. Vocabulary study will be extended across the curriculum as students develop in their ability to read and learn the meaning of unfamiliar words and increase vocabulary.
Oral Language: Students will develop an appreciation for the value of listening, respond to questions, and follow multi-step directions. Students will practice public speaking, reading aloud, and debate skills. They will understand and practice tools for speaking clearly and correctly and they will practice using nonverbal skills, such as eye contact, posture, tone, and facial expressions.
Study Skills: Students will learn to organize materials for tasks and practice time management with long-term assignments. Students will begin to develop note-taking techniques by focusing on paraphrasing, abbreviating, and summarizing.
Grammar: Students will become familiar with rules of grammar and apply these principles to their writing. First quarter will focus on 1) nouns (singular and plural, concrete and abstract, nouns as subjects and subject complements, etc.) ; 2) writing a personal narrative and 3) pronouns (personal, agreement with antecedents, and subject pronouns, etc.). Grammar lessons will be held 3 times a week, MWF. A review of each chapter will occur prior to each test. Students will have access to grammar lessons via google classroom on PowerPoints created by the teacher as well as from their textbook. IXL online program will be used in class and for homework to reinforce what the student is studying.
Writing: Students will write daily across the curriculum. Students will learn steps in the writing process, to include: researching, drafting, revising, proofreading, and creating a final product.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Sixth grade students will study World History from Prehistoric Times to 1500 A.D.
First Quarter objectives include:
1. What is Geography?
2. What is History?
3. Human Origins and Early Civilizations, Prehistory to 1000 B.C.; early development of hunter-gatherer societies and agricultural communities; ancient river valley civilizations, including Mesopotamia and the civilizations of the Hebrews, the Phoenicians, and the Kush.
4. Students will improve skills in historical research by using maps, globes, artifacts and pictures to analyze the physical and cultural landscapes of the world.
5. Students will identify major geographic feature important to the study of world history.
