4/25 Bias in History Lesson and Homework:
"Richard I was born on September 8, 1157. He became king of England in 1189 but spent most of his reign fighting in the Crusades. He led his armies to free the Holy Land. Richard I loved to be in the midst of battle and always fought bravely. He spent only 6 months of his reign in England, but his people loved him anyway. They admired his great courage and called him Richard the Lion-Hearted."
Facts are statements that can be proved true. Opinions are personal beliefs or value judgements. You will often need to make your own judgements or decisions based on facts, so you must be able to recognize them.
Learn the Skill
To distinguish fact from opinion use the following basic steps:
1) Look for facts by asking what can be proved true or false. A fact usually tells who, what, when, where, or how much. A fact can be proved true through evidence like primary sources, corroborating stories, measurements, etc.
2) Ask how you could check whether each fact is true. Could you do your own test by measuring, or counting? Could you find information in an encyclopedia or in another reliable reference source?
3) Look for opinions by identifying personal beliefs or value judgements. Look for words that signal personal feelings, such as "I think" or "I believe". Look for words that judge, such as "great" or "brave", "should", or "ought to". An opinion cannot be proved true. It might be based on someone's observations, however their personal feelings guide their reaction to the topic.
4) Decide whether facts or good reasons support each opinion. A well-supported opinion can help you make up your own mind-as long as you recognize it is an opinion and not a fact.
Practice the Skill
Re-read the passage above about Richard the Lion-Hearted and make sure you fully understand it. Look for sentences that are facts and those that are opinions. Let's discuss what you find and by using the questions above to guide our answers.
Homework
Please respond to the following questions after re-reading the passage. You should answer on a sheet of looseleaf and write your answers neatly or type and print your document. This homework is due on Wednesday, 4/27.
1) Identify facts in the paragraph that tell who, what, when, where, and how much.
2) Explain how each fact could be proved true or false.
3) Identify two examples of words that show personal feelings. Can these statements be proved true or false?
4) Now identify one word that signals judgement. Can the statement containing this word be proved true or false?
5) The last sentence in the passage expresses opinion. Is this opinion well supported with facts and reasons? Explain your answer.

Voyages in English
Descriptive Writing Assignment
In English classes we have been learning about adjectives and how to write descriptively. For this writing assignment you are going to pick a time period that you like and create a diary for someone living in that period. Think about the following kinds of characters and places:
Mesopotamia - ruler, priest, citizen of Sumer or Babylon
Egypt - Pharaoh, priest
Hebrews - slave in Egypt, follower of Moses
Greece - soldier, philosopher, priest, priestess, king, farmer
India - scientist, Buddhist, Raja, farmer
China - Emperor, warlord, general, follower of Confucious, merchant
Rome - Emperor, general, slave, woman, gladiator
Think about what the daily life of your character would be like or any major historical events would have taken place when your character was alive. Before you begin writing, please make a timeline for your character’s diary so you can see what you plan to include. This will help you when you’re writing.
You will have 2 days in class to work on your diary. You should use those days to draft and research what historically accurate details you will include. When you work at home, that is when you can do the more artistic elements of your diary.
Your diary should be 5 pages long - that is about 1 page per entry. If typed, your entries can be double-spaced. Think about having about 3-4 paragraphs per entry. Once you know what you are writing about, the number of paragraphs and entries will be easier than you think.
You MUST have historically accurate details and events. Do not include things that people in your time period would not have had like cars, phones, etc.
For your diary, you can create a diary with construction paper, buy a journal and write in it directly, etc. You can also include drawings or illustrations that will help us understand your character’s story better.
This will be due on February 14th.
You will be graded on:
Effort and focus on class
Submitting work on time
5 pages minimum with 3-4 paragraphs per page
Historically accurate details and events
Overall creativity

You should have 5 paragraphs outlined like this:
Introduction - where you state your opinion and then a few sentences that include general facts that you will expand on in your body paragraphs
3 Body paragraphs - essentially these 3 paragraphs are where you can expand on the facts that support your opinion. You can have 1 paragraph per fact.
Conclusion - this is similar to your intro where you state your opinion and then give us two or three facts that strongly support your opinion and end your speech on a high note.

9/30 For your Spelling and Vocab homework I want you to review your list words and determine the top 5 hardest words in the section for you. These can be words you struggle to spell correctly, words you have trouble using in a sentence because of the part of speech, or words where you struggle to remember the definition. Based on what you need to work on, you need to make index cards or a study sheet with those 5 words. If you struggle with spelling, maybe write the words 3 to 4 times to practice. If you want to work on memorizing the definitions of words, make a set of index cards to quiz yourself. This homework is very individualistic so make it worth your while when creating it. This homework is due on Tuesday next week and your first Spelling and Vocab test will be next Thursday.
