5/11 Renaissance Obituary Assignment
In class today you were given an assignment to create an obituary for one of the historical figures on the back of the handout. I tweaked the instructions a bit though. You will need to type up the obituary information and print it out. Then, instead of doing a half-portrait, you will do a complete portrait of your historical figure on a large sheet of paper from the classroom. The picture needs to fully fit the sheet of paper, it must be colorful and you may NOT trace it.
This work is due on May 19th. You will have time in class to work on it.
5/10 Renaissance Shield/Crest
Traditionally, students made shields that were used to decorate the banquet hall for the Renaissance festival. This year you will create a shield/full crest that includes designs, animals, and colors that are meaningful to you as well as 3 elements of your character's actual heraldic shield. I can help you find the shield for your character if you have trouble. On the back of your shield page I want you to include bullet points explaining why you picked the colors, animal(s), shapes, etc. that you did and what they mean. You can also "trick" your shield using the terms and order we learned about. This homework is due on the 19th. Paper to use for your shield is in the classroom and I will tell you the dimensions and shapes your shields can take in class.
Scroll through the link below to find some interesting elements to add to your crest:

5/9 Heraldic Crests Lesson
Please open the following links for class today and take notes on the following elements: metals, tinctures, and animal stances. What we learn in class today will inform you on how to create your Renaissance Shield/Crest.
http://wappenwiki.org/index.php?title=Heraldic_Elements
This whole page is full of what are called, ordinaries, or basic elements of coats of arms
There are rules for how you can design your shield: 2 metals can’t touch each other and 2 tinctures can’t touch each other. Fur on fur is not common, but you can put any design on fur.
Most crests use the featured metals, tinctures, and stains, but the non-traditional tinctures are not found in many crests
Divisions on shields helped create spaces on shields for charges/images and different colors
If you look at the top of the “heraldic elements” page there is a list of “charges” and an alphabet listing: http://wappenwiki.org/index.php?title=Heraldic_Elements
Scroll through any of the letters and get a feel for what images were used as charges. They all have meanings, so if you don’t remember what they mean, go back to this website: https://www.heraldryandcrests.com/pages/heraldic-symbolism-a-z
Just a note:
When you see words leopard or panther, you should know that people in Medieval Europe didn’t know what those animals looked like so they might look a bit fantastical and mythological.
A maunch is a sleeve, like clothing, and it was long because that was the fashion at the time.
A mullet is actually a star, not an unfortunate hairstyle haha and it could have as many points as they wanted!
Heraldic Language - How to read a crest/shield
A crest/shield is a lot like a flag. Most of the time we “read” a flag from left to right.
As well as “reading” a crest from left to right, there are also rules about the directions that charges/images should face on a crest.
Most images will face to our left, which is called the dexter/right side of a shield. You won’t see many charges facing the sinister/left side of a shield.
A crest is “tricked” (no, not like it’s all tricked out with lions and stripes and stuff, but kinda!) or written and read in a particular way. Below is an outline of how you would read a tricked crest and vocabulary you would use.
Order of reading:
Color
The animal/image and their stance
Metal
Anything that is colored on the animal
Animal Stances
Sejant - sitting
Forcene - 3 legs up
Courant - running
Salient - 2 legs up
Passant - standing
Rampant - 1 leg up
Guardant - head is facing you
Couped - If there is a clean line under the head
Arrache - ripped off, scraggly bottom of a head, or tree roots
How to “trick” or read a crest/shield
On the “Charges” tab and specifically between the letters F-K please find the greyhound crest or look at the image on this page:: http://wappenwiki.org/index.php?title=Charges_F-K
Read the greyhound crest: This crest is tricked azure, a greyhound rampant, argent, collard and langue (tongue) gules
Couple of points on this crest and how to “trick” it: you always list out the color, image and stance, metal, and anything that is colored
*Fun fact: you always name the additional colored parts of a charge and usually they are the same color
For homework, please "Trick" one of the following crests. You can write your answers on a sheet of paper to turn in on May 19th. You should be able to copy and paste the link to see the crests:

For this project you will do two things: perform a segment of your character's pages, not the whole thing, for the class in a dramatic reading on April 26th. I will work with you to figure out what section you will perform. You will be allowed to use the script while performing, but if you want to memorize your section you may! You can also wear costume pieces that fit over your uniform on the 26th to help you get in character. In class you will also have the opportunity to read through your character pages to make sure you understand what your character is saying and what their life is like.
You will also make a half poster about your character where you'll include the following:
An illustration of your character
Answer the questions: who (what is their name), what (what do they do in the village?), where (where the live, work, where you think the village is located?) when (does an event happen in their storyline that you can summarize?) why (why is your character important to the village? What value do they bring to the community?)

Sometimes people in the Middle Ages used their occupations for their last names. Find out the meanings of the following names: Smith, Cooper, Tanner, Carpenter, Weaver, and Mason. Can you think of any other names that have been derived from occupations? Try coming up with 3 more. You cannot make up the names, by the way, they need to be real names! Make a chart with all the names listed here as well as at least 3 more, for a total of at least 9 names. In your chart please include an illustration that helps explain the meaning of the name.
Take what we learned today about craft guilds and come up with the steps for becoming a member of a guild of your choice. Begin with apprenticeship and what you would need to do all the way to becoming a master craftsman. Write this as if it were a Medieval Guild Brochure and include pictures and color!

12/14 Hi kids, several of you asked about getting feedback on your next Research paper due in March. We'll use class time on the following dates to work on and revise your work.
T2 Research Paper draft dates:
1/13
2/8
2/17
Final due date 3/4
Since January 13th is just around the corner, don't stress out about having a full draft ready by then. I suggest having at least an outline of your paper drafted by the 13th. If you have any text written by then I can definitely provide you with feedback though!
By February 1st you should have some parts of your paper written.
12/13
Hi kids,
For your Trimester 2 Research Paper you will write a 3-5 page paper and pick between one of these Research Questions based on topics from the textbook:
What were the most important contributions from early China, and how did these influence other parts of the world?
Explain how the Roman Army was able to successfully take control of various regions around the Mediterranean and into Western Europe. You can discuss the weapons and military strategies used.
Evaluate what life was like for the different social classes in Roman society. What rights did people have? What roles did women and slaves play? How did the Roman Emperor keep the poor loyal to the empire?
How did the Roman gods and goddesses differ from the Greek ones? What role did the gods/religion play in Roman daily life?
Pick one emperor mentioned in Chapter 11 or 12 and explain which you think is the most influential leader in Roman history and why.
What roles did the Eastern and Western Roman empires play in spreading Christianity?
How did the life and death of Jesus and his message affect people and the future of the Mediterranean region?
Explain how the Muslims’ attitude toward and treatment of conquered people helped them spread Islam.
Before you come up with a Thesis Statement I would like for you to do some research and outline your paper. The topics you will cover in your body paragraphs (that answer the Research Question) will be what you use in your Thesis Statement.
Instead of a 5 paragraph essay, I would like you to write a more formal Research paper. This paper should be 3-5 pages, double spaced. This means that you will need to write more than 3 body paragraphs, but not more than 5, along with your introduction and conclusion. Basically, that means you should have about 4-5 topics that answer your research question, however you might need two paragraphs to explain just one topic. This will make more sense as you draft your paper.
To outline your paper you should use the following basic outline:
Introduction paragraph
Body Paragraph 1
2
3
4
(5)
Conclusion
Remember, your thesis statement should be in your introduction and conclusion.
You should use your textbook to start your research and then use other sources.
You will be graded on these points:
Turning the paper in on time and printed
Paper itself: overall writing, grammar
Format: MS heading, 12 point font, double spaced and 3 page minimum-5 page maximum
Historical facts presented
Bibliography on a separate page - use MLA format to cite all sources used

We will spend class time discussing topics, narrowing our questions, and developing thesis statements. We'll also go over how to organize your paper and how to cite sources.
Please read over pages 476 - 481 and 486-489 in your Voyages in English textbook. We will also do this in class together, but if you'd like to see how to organize your paper as well as how to cite sources and avoid plagiarism, you can check out those pages.
6th Grade Research Project Rubric
1st Trimester
Dear 6th Grade,
Today you were assigned your first, official Research Project Assignment. You may choose any of these research topics:
Living in Prehistoric times - The Stone Age, Bronze Age
Otzi the Iceman
The Epic of Gilgamesh
What life was like in Ancient Mesopotamia
Hammurabi’s Code
King Tut’s Cursed Treasure
Egyptian Religion - who were the gods and goddesses
How pyramids were built
Pick a pharaoh - male or female - and tell me what they did in their lifetime
*If you have something you are interested in that fits within one of these topics please let me know! I encourage you to do some digging and see what sparks your interest!
Here is a general outline you can follow to begin this assignment:
Choose a topic: Come up with your research question. Make sure your question is narrow enough for you to find information on. Once you have your question, try drafting your thesis statement - a sentence that summarizes the main point of your paper. (hint: this sentence should be in your intro paragraph) Since topics have been provided for you, there is not much to do for this except narrow down what aspects of the topic you wish to write about.
Conduct research: Please find a mix of text and online sources. Make sure your sources are reliable. Some suitable online sources include:
Britannica - https://www.britannica.com/
History - https://www.history.com/topics
Biography - https://www.biography.com/
Ancient History Encyclopedia - https://www.ancient.eu/
Library research, reading, and learning options available from Find It Virginia
Explora Middle School EBSCO database
User id: VAlib Password: Read1!
Organize your paper: Your paper should be organized like a 5 paragraph essay and it will be double spaced. A 5 paragraph essay has the following:
Introduction paragraph
3 Body paragraphs
Concluding paragraph
In your Voyages Textbook we will go over what to include in these paragraphs.
Drafts: Please take time to draft your paragraphs. As you research you should organize your thoughts and make sure you are only including information that answers your research question. If you find that the information you’re finding the most of or that you’re drawn to different information, maybe you should change your research question.
A first draft of your essay will be due on: October 13th
A second draft will be due on: November 5th
Your final paper is due on: November 19th
In our English classes we will revise your work for spelling and grammar as well as content. For these classes you will share your paper with me via google and I will work with you individually in class. More instructions on this will be announced and explained in class.
Cite your sources: You MUST cite all sources you use in this research paper. Anything you looked up that helped you understand your topic better must be listed, alphabetically at the end of your paper. This is a bibliography.
Extra Tips:
Make sure to keep your notes/research organized
You might need to rephrase your research question/thesis statement as you research
You will be graded on:
Your final product: minimum 5 paragraphs, grammar, spelling, organization of the paper, asking a research question and answering it as much as possible
Font 12 point Arial, Tahoma, Times New Roman
Middle School heading on the paper
A list of cited sources - use MLA format
Sharing drafts of your paper with me on 10/12 and 11/1 and making changes as instructed
PRINTING and Turning in your final paper on time - I will only accept hard copies of your final papers for credit
