Standing Together Against Injustice

In the past few months, we have been moved both physically and emotionally. Changes in our daily lives have been life-altering. We are now reeling as we watch the pain of racial injustice played out on the national stage. We are called to lift our voices at this time in support of actions that will transform our society.

As Brunonians, we not only speak out for change, we ‘act out’ for change. This is the Brown way. Whether it’s on a small or large scale, we all share a spirit of compassion and moral duty which was organically fostered during our time at Brown.

Two of our classmates have already used their voices to bring visibility to some significant issues during these times—N. Jeremi Duru, sports law professor at American University School of Law and Dr. Michele Benoit-Wilson, Board Certified OBGYN. We encourage you to read these excellent and relevant pieces (linked to their names) as well other articles, as you find a way to navigate this situation within the context of your own communities.

At the same time, we celebrate the announcement that our own Class Inclusion Officer Joelle Murchison has been elected to the Brown Corporation. Of note, Joelle is one of the founding members of the Inman Page Black Alumni Council among a number of other Brown and community leadership roles.

Some of you may be wondering, “What can I do?” In addition to engaging in the many resources and needs that are available in your local areas, we would also recommend supporting the Inman Page Black Alumni Council (IPC) Brown Annual Fund Scholarship Fund. It is a way for us to clearly demonstrate our support for current and future Black students at Brown. Please join us in supporting the IPC.

We, as your Class Leaders, unequivocally stand against all forms of injustice. This moment provides us with the opportunity to engage in discourse that will allow us to change the course of this world for the better. Let’s lead the way and make sure our voices are heard!

Ever true,

Your 1995 Class Leaders
