Advanced Photo

Course Description:

Advanced Digital Photography is a semester-long, half-credit course designed for students who have a strong interest in photography and wish to improve their skills as well as study areas related to photography more extensively. Students interested in this course should have successfully completed digital photography and should have a thorough understanding of the camera, photo editing programs and the Elements and Principles of Design as they relate to photography. Students taking this class will have the opportunity to build a quality digital portfolio and possibly submit for AP 2D Studio Art credit.

Students will be introduced to new photographers, digital artists, artists, and more sophisticated techniques as points of departure to create work that reflects that individual student's spirit and vision. By exploring photographic and digital media with the camera and computer, students will be able to develop a body of work that reflects a range of problem solving and ideation that will reflect the student’s individual spirit and vision. Students will research, keep art journals, have class critiques, individual critiques, and artistic dialogues that will inspire

them as they create.

The goals for all Advanced Photography Students are:

    • Extension of disciplines learned in Digital Photography.

    • More intricate and personal assignments.

    • Creative investigation of formal and conceptual issues.

    • Strong emphasis on historical and contemporary photographers.

    • Continue to build personal portfolio of work.

Required for this class:

    • Sketchbook or notebook. You will be keeping a photographic art journal which will include sketches, photographic research and written description/reflection of ideas for photo shoots, etc.

    • Recommended is to ring your own flash drive for printing personal images.

    • Personal digital camera (DSLR preferred) is recommended for this class however we do have cameras that you can sign out and will be responsible for it you do not own your own.

Course Expectations:

Students are expected to arrive to class prepared and ready to participate in class discussions. Students should expect to spend 2-3 hours per week out of class shooting photographs as this is an advanced class that will progress at a steady pace. Students are also expected to handle all school equipment with care. Finally, all students are expected to follow school and classroom rules and behave in a safe and respectful manner while in the classroom.

Course Evaluation:

In class Art Assignments (70%): All assignments will be turned in via flash drive or uploaded to your google docs folder on the due date. Late work will be accepted up to two weeks late with penalty per week late.

Art Journal (30 %) : Will be checked weekly and will be based on assignments given.

Written assignments (30 %): Art History readings, in class critiques, etc.

Final exam will be given at the end of the semester and will be worth 20% of your overall grade.

Class Rules and Expectations:

Maintain regular attendance and be on time.

Plan, organize and complete projects and assigned tasks on time and meeting standards of

quality.

Take responsibility of workspace, materials, and missed classes.

Maintain appropriate interactions with staff and other students.

No cell phones or ipods during class.
