Advanced Art

Course Objectives

The Advanced Art portfolio course is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art and who wish to develop mastery in concept, composition, and execution of ideas. This is an advanced level art course and students will be expected to work hard, both in and out of class. The year will begin with a review of basic drawing, seeing, and design skills. The class will investigate various drawing media through representational and abstract themes using techniques such as drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, painting, and photography. Connections to art historical and contemporary movements are a central component of the curriculum. At the end of the year, each student will have a developed portfolio you may use for college or job applications. Those that chose to move on to AP art will have a good start to developing a portfolio to submit to the college board for possible AP Credit.

The goals of all advanced art students in this class are:

    • To record what you see through various drawing mediums, printmaking techniques, and painting processes.

    • To expand your knowledge of basic elements and principles of design in each medium to develop a more sophisticated and personal style of self expression.

    • To gain a greater familiarity with artists past and present and from various cultures to help give you perspective to your own artwork and to your identity to the world.

    • To learn to analyze, evaluate, and interpret your own work as well as the work of others.

    • To develop a portfolio for submission to colleges and/or employers.

Course Requirements:

    • Be inventive and strive for your own success.

    • Participate in class instruction on various processes and design concepts.

    • Be responsive to art history lectures, slide shows and possible quizzes or written work.

    • Participate in daily and weekly critiques of individual, class and professional work including participating in art exhibits and gallery/museum visits.

    • Commit to a substantial amount of work outside of class for both sketchbook and artwork.

    • Assist in the maintenance of the studio space as well as respect all materials and equipment.

Expectations for all Portfolios:

All advanced art students are expected to submit a portfolio for grade at the end of the year. This Portfolio will consist of 10-12 finished artworks from in class units. students will also be asked to do 2-3 works that explore a specific idea using their choice of media. These works will be part of a plan that worked on throughout the second semester.

Grading:

Everything you do, in and out of class, contributes to your achievement and effort in grades. Even though the instructor does the final evaluation, you will have opportunity to self evaluate major projects. The emphasis is on studio work and this will make up the majority of your grade, however sketchbook and written work will make up the rest of that balance.

70% Class work/studio grades - effort, following directions, quality, creativity/problem- solving, improvement, completion of assignments

20% Homework/sketchbook grades - (effort, following directions, quality, creativity, improvement, completion)

10%Written work - (effort, thinking, knowledge, quality of response ) Participation- ( active participation in all activities), attendance, make-up work

Materials:

Most of the art materials are supplied. Although some materials may be “checked out” for use at home, it will be good to have some basic art supplies to use or multi media projects. Although you will be given a sketchbook, it is important that you have a folder or binder for notes, handouts, and papers.

Recommended Materials to purchase: Oil/Acrylic Brushes (3 sizes), drawing pencils, Erasers (kneaded, white vinyl), Prismacolor pencil set (strongly recommended) and Sharpie Markers (esp. fine/extra fine)

Extra Help and Studio Hours:

I will be available for technical and conceptual assistance during the class day and by appointment. The art room will be available for use after school hours with the exception of Friday unless otherwise notified. You may consult other classmates for assistance with critiques and conceptual development however all work must be your own and difficult conceptual decisions should be your own. That being said, we are all striving to make successful images and a healthy collaborative attitude is encouraged.
