Nutrition Unit

  • The goal of my nutrition unit is to help students achieve various nutrition learning goals by creating learning opportunities for students to make valuable connections.
  • Students learn quality nutrition education by practicing new skills and building self-efficacy in an interactive and inquiry-based way.
  • Goals are multi-dimensional and pertain to physical, cognitive, emotional, mental, and social domains. Significant academic integration is bridged in and students participate in holistic learning.
  • Curriculum Goals:
    • Name the five food groups and identify food choices within each group.
    • Describe the importance of eating foods from all five food groups.
    • Describe the benefits of eating different color fruits and vegetables.
    • Explain the importance of choosing healthy foods and beverages.
    • Identify how many servings a day to have from each food group for optimal health.
    • Identify a variety of healthy snacks.
    • Identify the benefits of drinking plenty of water.
    • Describe the benefits of eating breakfast every day.
    • Describe the type of foods and beverages that should be limited.

Health Standards:

Disease Prevention & Control: Students will learn the signs, symptoms, and treatment of chronic and communicable diseases, and will gain skills related to health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance.

Nutrition: Students will gain the knowledge and skills to select a diet that supports health and reduces the risk of illness and future chronic diseases.
