Chopped in P.E.

Chopped Bulletin Board
  • I decided to turn a reality-based cooking game show into a PE lesson. I saw this as a great way to increase student motivation and incorporate multiple learning goals. It also tied in STEM concepts & makerspace in the PE setting. I wanted students to have an opportunity to be creative and use teamwork with an end goal in mind that meets students needs, as well as meets standards and student learning objectives. This lesson idea was a huge success!
  • Goals included: creativity, communication,teamwork, decision-making, problem-solving, planning/drafting/sketching, quick-thinking, experimenting, higher-level thinking, collaboration, presentation, academic integration
  • Gist of the activity:
    • What equipment will you get in the box?! (Students loved this part!)
    • What game will you and your group create?!
    • How will you plan your presentation?!
  • The video I made does a great job portraying all of the components of this activity, as well as show how engaged students were in the challenge. It was so fun to see what they came up with. I actually plan on using a lot of their creative ideas as future activities in PE. They taught me! This lesson was a hit in my presentation at the conference. PE teachers, as well as classroom teachers, walked away thinking of giving it a try. For example, a math teacher told me she could create a similar activity in which students open up a basket and have to create a math game.
