Specialist E4 Jerry Wayne “John” Gathright was drafted into the Vietnam War. He served in the United States Army in artillery. Eventually, he drove trucks hauling ammunition. After being hit by shrapnel close to the front line, Mr. Gathright was awarded the Purple Heart Medal in honor of his service. He served his country with distinction. After his time in the military, Mr. Gathright returned home to Buffalo Island and continued to be an active member of his community.
