Workload and Overloads

Full-time faculty are obligated to teach a full load. This is considered to be 15 LEH in the Fall and Spring semesters, and between 5-6 LEH in the Summer term. One LEH is a “lecture equivalent hour”. A typical lecture only class is 3 LEH, while a lecture/lab combination is 5.25 LEH. The reason for the latter is that, for some traditional, yet inexplicable, reason, lab hours are considered to be only 0.75 LEH. According to the administrative rules, adjunct faculty may teach up to 8 credit hours or 11 LEH during the fall and spring semesters. They may teach up to 4 credit hours or 5.25 LEH during the summer semester. Adjunct faculty are not required to teach a full load (although an MSTA who doesn’t teach their expected load for more than one semester may lose that status).

Often, though, both adjunct and full-time faculty may want to go above and beyond the call of duty and take an overload. What exactly constitutes an overload varies depending on one’s position and the time of year.

In the fall and spring:

In the summer:

All overloads must be approved by the Vice-President. Full-time faculty will almost never be allowed to teach over 21 LEH or more nor will adjunct faculty ever be allowed to teach 15 LEH or more.
