Utilizing critical reasoning and the nursing process, the student is expected to:
Apply the eight (8) rights in the administration of parenteral medications
Prepare and administer a medication via the intramuscular (IM) and/or subcutaneous (SQ), routes including:
a. Identification of the parts of a syringe
b. Selection of appropriate needle- and syringe-size to administer IM, SQ, and intradermal (ID) medications
c. Correctly name and locate the landmarks, nerves, great vessels, and tissue landmarks pertinent to each injection site
d. Maintain sterility of the needle and appropriate parts of the syringe and medication preparation and simulated administration of parenteral medications
e. Demonstration of standard precautions to handle and dispose of contaminated sharp objects
f. Demonstration of correct procedure for aspirating fluid from a vial and ampule, reconstituting a dry powder, and mixing two types of medication in one syringe
g. Demonstration of the method used to mix two types of insulin in one syringe
3. Apply appropriate principles while correctly performing the simulated administration of IM, SQ, and ID injections
4. Demonstrate the correct administration sliding scale and routine dose of insulins
