ARTIST STATEMENT - ROYCE DEANS

I enjoy working with the human form. I try to find the simplicity in the complex shapes that bodies have. Breaking them down to silouettes is a challenge that lets me say what I need to say about a pose with as little as possible.
I find that monotypes are a great way to explore new ideas in my work. They have a painterly aspect to the way that ink is applied and removed from the plate that is very satisfying. I tend to make fast decisions while what I am working on develops and being able to manipulate what is on the printing plate quick works well for me.
