If anyone wants to see heaven later, they must live in ways that are angelic now!
A website designed to support students currently enrolled in Sophomore Religion class at the Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools.
This course explores New Church teachings on life after death through Emanuel Swedenborg’s Heaven and Hell, alongside cultural, biblical, and modern perspectives. Students begin by reflecting on their own beliefs and comparing them with national surveys and funerary customs before examining biblical teaching on the afterlife. Near Death Experiences are introduced as a way to open conversation and deepen curiosity about the spiritual world. The course then turns to Swedenborg’s teachings, beginning with the Lord as the center of heaven, the life of mutual love, and the vision of heaven as the “Grand Man.” Students develop fluency in the science of correspondences, learning how spiritual realities are expressed in symbolic imagery. With this foundation, they study the lived experience of heaven, the sorting process in the world of spirits, and the reality of hell as a state of life opposed to heaven. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to keep an open mind, think critically, and freely form their own conclusions. The emphasis is not only on what awaits after death but on how these teachings shed light on the choices, loves, and perspectives that shape life right now.
