Absent Students

What to do when you miss a class...

  1. Check your class calendar, and see what was assigned.
  2. Check Class Notes and the Class Documents for any notes, handouts, answer keys, bell work, etc.
  3. Reach out to classmate if necessary.
  4. Coming to school with the notes and work completed will ensure that you are caught up with the class for the next day.

A student who misses a class

  • may turn in the homework assignment for full credit by the end of the second day back at school. For instance, if a student misses Monday, any collected assignment must be turned in by 3:29pm on Wednesday. This policy is regardless of if the class meets on any given day.
  • must complete missed bell work by finding it on OneNote and completing it without assistance on a “Bell Work Absence Sheet”. This sheet must be stapled to the weekly bell work in the folder. If the student is absent on the last day before a Day 1 collection, the student is still responsible for turning in the bell work along with the weekly collection.

A student who misses a quiz

  • must E-mail the teacher prior to returning to school to propose a make up time
  • Since the quiz is sometimes passed back to the class immediately, I It is up to the teacher if the student will make up the quiz for credit or if the student will take the quiz for practice and receive an exemption.

A student who misses a test

  • must E-mail the teacher prior to returning to school to propose a make up time.
  • The test must be made up by the end of the second day back at school.
  • If the student was absent more than a single day, the student may discuss options with the teacher but must initiate the conversation on the day the student returns to school, regardless of if the class meets that day.
  • If the student is absent only on the review day before the test, the student must take the test with the class as scheduled.

ATTENDANCE: (See pages 23 & 24 in the Student Handbook for more information on BJPS Attendance Polices)

  • Regular attendance is extremely important. Consistent with school policy students should notify the teacher at least 5 school days in advance for all prearranged absences (including retreats).
  • If absent from class for any reason, it is your responsibility to check the class website for notes and the homework. If further clarification is needed, please see the teacher when you return to school.
  • If you are absent a single day before a quiz or test, you will be required to take the quiz or test as scheduled. If the day of the quiz or test is the first, or only, day missed, the quiz or test must be made up on the day that you return to school.
  • If you miss class due to an appointment and are at school part of the day, you are expected to see the teacher before the end of the day.
  • If you miss a quiz or test but come to school after that class period, you must see the teacher and make up the quiz or test that day. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a grade reduction.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCE AND SUSPENSIONS: (See pages 23 and 24 in the Student Handbook for more information)

  • Each unexcused absence will result in the deduction of two percentage points from the final overall grade.
  • The Dean’s Office determines if an absence is unexcused.
  • Parents have 10 days to rectify unexcused absences with the Dean’s Office.
