Application Process
1) Minimum Applicant Requriements
Must be 18 years of age or older
Must have a valid CA drivers license
Must live in Alameda County or a contiguous county
Successfully complete unit background check at conclusion of Basic Rescue Class
2) Attend a 90 minute unit orientation
This is a 90 minute overview of the team and will cover Phase A of the Basic Rescue Class. Phase A classes are on Thursday Nights with some Saturday's that begin in May and concludes in September.

All prospective applicants must attend one of the orientation meetings to receive an application to join. These will be accepted starting on January 8th and close on January 29th. The application will only be available to prospective members who have attended an orientation meeting.
Physical Abilities testing and Oral Board Interviews take place after all applications are processed. Basic Training Class will then begin in May.
Prospective members are welcome to contact us throughout the year and get on our interest list. Members on the interest list will receive updates and information on orientation dates and training schedule. In addition, they are welcome to attend our unit general meeting to find out more about the team and its activities.
During the Basic Rescue Class, attendance is mandatory for every class. Classes meet on Thursday evenings from 7pm-10pm, two Saturdays, 8am to 5pm, and one weekend 5am Saturday to 6pm Sunday. The unit has attendance requirements to maintain membership on the team. After completion of your basic training members are required to participate in at least six hours per month of unit activities by attending unit training’s, callouts, or public relations events.
Some of the skills you will learn in the Basic Training Class include: search techniques, survival skills, land navigation skills; GPS, map and compass, patient packaging and litter transport, low angle rescue, knots and ropes, lighting and generators, tracking, and more. But the training in the basic class is just the tip of the iceberg!

Medical Certification Requirement:
Complete within 1 year of acceptance on the team (if you do not already possess this)
(1) CPR for Healthcare Provider
and (2) Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) NHTSA Certified, Advanced First Aid, or Wilderness First Responder*
* Wilderness First Responder classes MUST also provide a First Responder certificate.
ALCO SAR also accepts advanced medical certifications such as EMT, Paramedic and other professional medical licenses based upon type. Contact us for further information regarding professional license acceptance.
ALCO SAR offers CPR and Advanced First Aid classes at no charge i after completion of the SAR Basic Rescue Class. These classes meet the medical certification requirements for all members.

Note: If you take a class that meets in May thru September, be sure the class is NOT on Thursday nights or Saturdays, since that is when the Basic Training Academy will be in progress.
