A threat assessment is when a group of school officials convenes to identify, evaluate, and address threats or potential threats to school and student safety and security.
When a member of the school site staff (teacher or administrator) believes that there is a possibility that a student may be a threat to themselves or others, you must follow the Threat Assessment Procedures to determine the level of the threat and the subsequent response. This SOP summarizes steps that must be followed to determine if a student is a threat to the students and staff of a school campus and how to respond.
See Level 1: Safety Response Protocol for definition and examples.
Meet with the student and witnesses if needed and gather information and document incident as necessary in AERIES.
Respond as needed: Counsel student, reprimand student, notify parent, assign school discipline in appropriate, hold restorative justice session, etc. If the student is suspended and has an IEP or 504 plan, inform the school psychologist, case manager, and guidance counselor.
If progressive discipline has been implemented and the issue has not been resolved successfully, or the student continues to make similar threats that are ongoing with different or the same student(s), refer to Level 2: Safety Response Protocol.
See Level 2: Safety Response Protocol for definition and examples.
Take immediate precautions to protect potential victim(s), notifying intended victim(s) and the victim('s) parents.
Complete the SSIF to investigate and determine if school discipline is appropriate. School psychologist and site administrator will determine the need for a Mental Health Safety Inquiry (Find this under the Suicide Prevention tab.)
Create a safety plan, behavior contract/anti-harassment contract. Student and parent sign the safety plan and any additional contracts at re-entry meeting with administrator.
Within 10 SCHOOL days, if student is SPED or 504 and 10 days of suspension have accumulated, conduct a manifestation determination meeting. (See SPED discipline SOP)
Direct case manager or guidance counselor to call an SST, IEP, or 504 meeting within 2 weeks to determine need for additional interventions or revisions to the safety plan/contracts.
Schedule a follow-up meeting to monitor success of plan/contracts and confirm that the threat has been resolved by interviewing all parties.
See Level 3: Threat Imminent Response Protocol There is a firearm, weapon or detailed threat of lethal violence.
Take IMMEDIATE ACTION: CALL 911
