Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) Program

The 38North Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) Program recognizes and rewards the elite members of our cloud security advisory team. This voluntary program bestows benefits – and responsibilities – on recognized 38North SMEs. Specifically, SME Program participants are entitled to an annual bonus of up to 5% of salary, in addition to their standard 38North bonus. They also receive a dedicated SME charge code that may be used at their manager’s discretion for attendance at approved events.

Please note that employees at the Director-level and above are not eligible to participate in the SME program.

Qualifications

To qualify as a 38North SME, applicants must:

Have at least one full year of service to 38North and 5+ years of total security experience.
Have a consistent record of achieving goals as described in their performance goals
Be recognized by their clients as providers of elite-level consulting and advisory
Be recognized by their peers as leaders and mentors within the community
Receive unanimous consent from the 38North management team for designation as a SME, with SME status reviewed annually by the management team

How to Apply

To apply for the 38North SME program, applicants shall:

Indicate to their reporting manager that they are interested in being a member of the SME team.
Provide a letter of reference, written by a 38North peer, attesting to their leader/mentorship skills
Provide a project plan describing an independent project to be executed over the next year to improve 38North performance, operations or expertise. This is repeated annually.

Responsibilities of SME Program Members

After designation as a SME, to earn the bonus 38North SMEs are expected to:

Meet their utilization targets as specified in the employee handbook.
Consistently step in on short notice to help clients with technical challenges.
Complete approximately 40 hours of annual training each year, with required training determined by the Training Lead on an individual basis.
On a bi-annual basis, generate approved content for publication on the 38North blog, YouTube channel, Lunch and Learn etc.
Serve as a mentor to up to 2 junior team members, with bi-weekly video calls or in-person check-ins with mentees and on call availability as needed to support their growth.
Participate in security and/or cloud relevant community events while representing 38North, on an at least bi-annual basis. Evidence of participation and a briefing on the event will be provided to the SME Team at the monthly SME meeting.
With the help of the marketing team, seek out and apply for opportunities to speak at no less than two conferences and / or events while representing 38North.
Achieve the milestones specified in their independent annual project plan to improve 38North performance.
