Media Guidelines at Venues
Media Guidelines at Venues
Media Access Guidelines
The following procedures are in place for media on competition days at a venue. Specifically, when the venue is active with competition, volunteer media representatives are scheduled to service media within all media operational spaces (venue media centre, media mixed zones, photography zones, and assigned media seating where applicable).
Any rebroadcast, retransmission, or account of any live competition, without the express written consent of the Host Society, is prohibited.
Accredited media can capture images of pre-competition warm-up periods.
Accredited media shall not sell advertising related to Games coverage.
Universum Media Inc. and SportsCanada.TV are the official production suppliers of the 2025 Canada Games. They have access to designated areas at sport venues, including the field of play. These broadcasters carry exclusive rights for interviews with athletes, coaches and officials on the field of play and first rights in the mixed zones to conduct interviews.
Only the Host Society's production suppliers have the right to interviews on the Field of Play after a competition.
Accredited media can conduct camera interviews afterwards in the media mixed zone. Host production suppliers have first right of refusal, both on the field of play and in the media mixed zone.
When the Host Society provides live stream material, the accredited media outlet will credit the Host appropriately.
Other than the Host production suppliers, no other media shall provide live play-by-play coverage of the competitions without the express written consent of the Host Society.
No broadcaster or media outlet should identify themselves as the sole broadcaster of the 2025 Canada Games.
Streaming or retransmission online of any 2025 Canada Games event - live or recorded - may not be posted without permission from the Canada Games Council and/or the 2025 Canada Games Host Society.
Mixed Media Zone & Interviews
All competition venues have a dedicated mixed zone close to the athletes’ exit from the field of play. Media volunteers are on hand to oversee the operation of and access to these zones.
The media mixed zone is available to accredited media only. Mixed zones are open on competition days and not open on training or practice days. Mixed zones are open one minute after competition ends and remain open for 30 minutes following competition.
Interview requests must be made to the media volunteer or Sport Information Officer (SIO) to coordinate with the P/T Mission Communications staff.
Requests from the Games’ production suppliers for an interview after an event take precedence over those from other media.
Interviews are conducted in the mixed zone after the competition, based on the athlete’s or coach's availability.
Interviews prior to competition, on the field of play and in the locker rooms are not permitted.
Wherever possible, coaches, officials and athletes should enter the mixed zone immediately after a competition to promote media coverage of the Games.
A reminder that while athletes/coaches are encouraged to participate in interviews, they are not required to do so.
INTERVIEWS DURING PRACTICE SESSIONS
Practice sessions are not open to the public. If media want access to a practice session, a request must be made to the P/T Mission Communications representative. If access is authorized, the P/T Mission Communications representative will supervise the session.
MEDIA COVERAGE DURING MEDAL PRESENTATIONS
Photographers and videographers are authorized to photograph and film all medal presentations. As most of these ceremonies take place on the field of play, special access is given during the medal presentations since media are not authorized on the field of play at other times. At the end of the ceremony, medal winners go to the media mixed zone to meet the media for interviews and additional photographs.
To arrange access to medal presentations:
1) Media to advise the media volunteers that they would like to cover the medal presentations and wait in the mixed media zone for medal presentation team members.
2) Sport Representative team members to escort media to podium area.
3) Once medal presentation is complete, media are escorted to the media mixed zone.
4) Media volunteers and Sport Information Officers (SIOs) support media mixed zone process.
PHOTOGRAPHY POSITIONS
Accredited photographers are provided with the most advantageous locations possible relative to all other space requirements at a venue. Designated photography positions are available for accredited photographers at each venue on a first-come, first-served basis and some positions are shared. To gain access to these positions, a photographer bib must be signed out from the Venue Media Centre. At Fortis Canada Games Complex, Aquarena and Memorial Fieldhouse, the photography bibs can be signed out from the mixed media zone. The bib grants the photographer access to the photo locations and must be returned to the Venue Media Centre it was signed out from following its use.
Accredited photographers have access to the field of play during medal presentations. See the section above regarding gaining access to the field of play for medal presentations.
▪ Flash photography is not authorized during competitions at competition venues
▪ Flash photography is authorized during medal ceremonies and Opening/Closing Ceremonies
▪ Photographers are permitted in the Mixed Media Zones area and Medal Presentation area (for medal ceremonies)
▪ Photographers are also permitted to take photographs in front-of-house locations as long as they don't obstruct spectators
▪ Photographers should activate the “silent” shutter mode where possible. It will be mandated for sports including diving, golf, swimming, athletics, and possibly others (to avoid distractions for athletes and compromising the integrity of the competition).
RESERVED MEDIA SEATING
Media seating is available at all ticketed competition events, where seating allows, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Accessing Non-Ticketed Venues
At non-ticketed venues, where there is no assigned seating, accredited media may spectate from designated viewing areas without a pass.
The non-ticketed venues are as follows: Bally Haly Country Club (Golf); The Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club (Sailing), Rotary Sunshine Park (Swimming - Open Water), Quidi Vidi Lake (Canoe-Kayak) Marine Drive (Cycling - Road Race), Downtown St. John’s (Cycling - Criterium), Team Gushue Highway (Cycling - Time Trial), and Pippy Park (Mountain Bike).
Although you will not need your accreditation to watch these sports, you will need it to gain access to the media areas, including the Venue Media Centres and media mixed zones.
