We are a group of Year 2 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) currently conducting a Community Health Project (CHP) focusing on smartphone hygiene and microbial contamination. As future healthcare professionals, we recognize the importance of preventive health measures and public health education in reducing the spread of infectious diseases within the community.
This project was developed with the aim of increasing public awareness of smartphone contamination, addressing existing research gaps, and contributing to the improvement of current hygiene practices and health promotion strategies. Although smartphones have become an indispensable part of daily life, their potential role as reservoirs for microorganisms is often overlooked. Through our project, we seek to highlight this hidden public health concern and encourage healthier smartphone usage and hygiene habits.
This website serves as an accessible platform for health education, providing evidence-based information on smartphone contamination, phone hygiene practices, and their implications for personal and public health. We believe that empowering individuals with knowledge is a crucial step towards promoting behavioural change and reducing the risk of microbial transmission.
A unique feature of our initiative is the integration of practical smartphone swabbing activities with digital health education. By allowing participants to observe the microbial contamination present on their own smartphones while simultaneously accessing educational resources through this website, we aim to create a more impactful and memorable learning experience. This combination of real-world evidence and accessible health information helps bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding, ultimately encouraging greater awareness and adoption of good smartphone hygiene practices.
Through this project, we hope to contribute towards a healthier and more informed community, where individuals are empowered to take simple yet meaningful steps to protect their health and the health of those around them.
