BHC Bully Prevention

BHC is a No Place for Hate campus.

We do not tolerate bullying behaviors.

Bullying prevention is reinforced in my counseling lessons in every classroom K-5th grade. The Kelso's Choices Conflict Resolution curriculum is used along with other lessons to teach students how to get along, handle conflict, solve problems, and ask for help when the problem becomes big.

K-2 learn about Kelso's Choices

3-5 grades learn the conflict resolution wheel.

Bullying is:

Unfair and one-sided.

It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.

Bullying is:

  • an imbalance of power
  • over and over (or one significant act)
  • intentional

For the official legal definition: http://classroom.leanderisd.org/users/5006/docs/bullyingdefinition.pdf

Imbalance of power

Imbalance of power means someone is making you feel less than them (but this isn't true since we are all equal!) Is someone using power over you in a hurtful way? This could be physically hurting you, or it could be calling you names to put you down. It also could be leaving you out of a group. If the action doesn't really bother you, it isn't making you feel less than the person. You can probably just ignore it.

Over and over (or one significant act)

The bullying behavior keeps happening over and over. The person is hurting you repeatedly, or hurting others repeatedly.

On Purpose

The person is intentionally hurting you. It isn't an accident. They aren't just joking. If you tell the person to stop and the person keeps doing it, it is now intentional.

Report Bullying!

If you are being bullied, report it to a trusted adult and keep reporting it until it stops. Tell your teacher. Tell the counselor. Tell the principal. Keep telling until it stops. You can report anonymously by sending an Anonymous Alert https://www.anonymousalerts.com/leanderisd/

If you see someone being bullied, help the person and report the behavior to an adult.
