The Department functions with the following objectives as its guiding principles:
To help the student gain expertise in current information technology areas, primarily web and communication technologies, without compromising on core fundamentals
To provide a strong foundation in computers, with a clear technology focus
To enable all-round development of the student, her personality and attitudes.
Courses offered
In 1986, the Master of Computer Applications course was introduced. Meenakshi College earned the distinction of being the first college under the University of Madras to offer this highly prestigious course. With this milestone was born the Department of Computer Science. In 1988, the evening college MCA course was also introduced, bringing the total strength of MCA students to 30, i.e. 15 each in the day and evening streams.
In 2004, the M.Sc. (Information Technology) course was introduced with a sanctioned strength of 26 under the Autonomous stream.
In 2009, the B.Sc. (Computer Science) course was started with the sanctioned strength of 50 under the Autonomous stream.
In 2013, the M.Phil. (Computer Science) course was started with the sanctioned strength of 4 full time and 4 part time under the Autonomous stream.
Certificate Courses Offered
In 2009, the UGC-Sponsored Career Oriented Course was introduced. This is a three-year progressive programme open to under-graduate students, through which a student can earn an Advanced Diploma in Web Applications Development along with her degree.
From 2010, Lema Labs, IIT Madras is offering the Kaizen Robotics Programme, a one-semester course on Basic Robotics, The maximum student strength allowed for the course is 60. The course is open to students of I and II year B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science.
In 2013 August, NIELIT 'O' Level Course was introduced. The objective of the course is to enable a student to acquire knowledge pertaining to fundamentals of Information Technology. 'O' level course consist of four theory modules, one practicals and one project.
In 2019 September, KKM Soft, is offering the Internet of Things, a one-semester course, strength allowed for the course is 70. The course is open to students of II B.Sc. Computer Science, Master of Computer Science and M.Sc. Information Technology.

Infrastructure
In 1987, the college’s first fully equipped Computer Center was formally inaugurated by the then Vice-President of India, His Excellency Sri R. Venkataraman. In the nascent sages of the formation of the Department and lab, Dr. C. R. Muthukrishnan of the Department of Computer Science, IIT Madras, and Dr. P. A. Venkatachalam and Dr. R. K. Subramanian of Anna University provided tremendous support and guidance.
In 1988, saw the birth of Computer Center II in the same wing of the college building, a few rooms away from the first lab. This lab was inaugurated by His Excellency Sri R Venkatraman, this time as the President of India, on 31 August 1988. Regular upgrades of equipment have constantly been done over the years.
In 2003 witnessed a culmination of sorts of the effort of the past 17 years as far as computing facilities in this college go – the inauguration of the Abhinava Vidyatheertha Computer Centre, a huge computing facility covering an area of about 7200 sq. ft. The Centre, located in the second floor of the southern wing of the main college building, was inaugurated by Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India with Dr. E. Balaguruswamy, Vice-chancellor, Anna University, gracing the occasion as well. This facility now functions as the central computing facility in the college, and currently houses more than 120 personal computers and powerful state-of-the-art servers, interconnected via local networks and supported with uninterruptible power supply. Powerful and popular programming environments are provided for students to enrich their learning experience.
The year 2003 also witnessed the introduction of a leased line facility to supplement the already existing dial-up internet connectivity. An official website for the college is also in place, and was launched as part of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 2003.
In 2010, a Robotics and Technology Centre was also created in collaboration with Lema Labs, IIT Madras. A new room with technology aids is being created for the Centre. A new lab with 50 thin clients was inaugurated in 2011 to cater to the intensive use of the lab facilities by other departments. Another such lab with about 75 systems is on its way.
The Internet facilities have also been upgraded to an 20 mbps leased line from Tata Communications Ltd., and the infrastructure in terms of firewalls, servers, backup solutions, UPS facilities and PCs and client computers have been vastly upgraded in terms of quantity and quality.
Library facilities
The main library of the college, called Sri Bharathi Theertha Library is the cynosure of all eyes. Spread over about 10,000 square feet, the library is home to about 47,000 books. Endowed with a mezzanine floor that houses a portion of the library's book racks, the library is centrally air-conditioned and provides a lovely ambience to sit and read.
