OTES 2.0 Resources

Getting Ready for your Observations 22/23

Basic Overview 2022/23

(OTES 2.0 Rubric)

The goal of the observation cycle is do establish 'your' teaching based on the OTES 2.0 Rubric. I will be collecting data to ultimately plot evidence on the OTES 2.0 Rubric. This is an evidence-based approach and not one of hunches and assumptions. You have various areas to show what you are doing:

Pre-conference meeting you want to (this is usually the day before observation during planning)

  1. Log in to ohioes.com

  2. Click on the Observation Cycle

  3. Answer the questions (be sure in have the rubric next to you to ensure you share the info. Use brevity to be concise. Don't be afraid of bullet points.

  4. Remember, your HQSD data is part of this cycle and we will need to know what you are collecting and how you are adjusting your instruction, assessments, and approach based on the data.

Day of Observation:

  1. I will have a period and day scheduled with you on Google Calendar

  2. I will come in a sit down with my laptop to take notes

  3. I will stay at least 30 minutes

  4. I ask that your attachments (artifacts) be uploaded within three days of observation so I can complete the observation write up within 10 school days.

Post Conference is:

  1. Scheduled to be conducted within 10 school days of the observation

  2. Remember, I will use Walkthrough, Pre-observation questions, Observation, and Artifacts to use evidence for each part of the rubric.

  3. Remember, your HQSD data is part of this cycle and we will need to know what you are collecting and how you are adjusting your instruction, assessments, and approach based on the data.

Big Picture---Again, I am looking for what you are doing (and celebrating that) and find ways to improve instruction and the teaching/learning cycle. In some ways, I like to say 'show it' and 'grow it'. Show what you are doing (look for small ways to grow in those areas) and be open to areas that you need to improve and grow.

Example-don't just share gender numbers for student info such as 10 boys and 11 girls. The rubric is asking for much more specific information. The rubric in "Knowledge of Students' "The teacher’s instructional plan reflects connections to student experiences, culture and developmental characteristics. These may include prior learning, abilities, strengths, needs, talents, backgrounds, skills, language proficiency and interests." As you can see by the rubric, the skilled area is asking for how the teacher interacts including students' experiences, culture, and developmental characteristics. The teacher should focus on reacting to collecting information in various ways to lean into different areas based on data.

Review for each Observation Cycle

  • Step #0-I will be doing walkthroughs using the ohioes.com format. I will stay 10 minutes for this. You will get an email notification as I will 'pin' it before leaving your room to find your results.

  • Step #1-I will send a Google invite for observation and pre-observation (Pre-conference during planning the day before your observation).

  • Step #2-Have your pre-observation filled out as this is one of three ways to prove evidence in area. During pre-conference, we will reference items that you can upload artifacts/attachments after school observation. Be ready to share your HQSD data and how you are reacting to it.

  • Step #3-Live Observation-I will visit your room and spend at least 30 minutes scripting what you do, say, etc. This is another way to collect evidence to prove level competence.

  • Step #4-Upload artifacts to Ohioes.com based on the rubric within three days of your observation (don't upload everything you have. Instead, upload specific areas based on the rubric (that I didn't see in the observation).

  • Step #5-I will schedule a post observation to go over the results of observation based on the rubric (and observation, observation, and artifacts). This is will be done within 10 school days of your observation date.
