Attendance is key. Students struggle and get behind when absent.

Students need to be at school to be successful. HB410 provides a legal reaction to missing school. Section 3321.191 of the Ohio Revised Code sets regulations governing excuses for past absences from school and they are as follows.

Reason for Absence:

  • Personal illness
  • Illness in the family
  • Quarantine of the home
  • Death of a relative
  • homework due to absence of parents or guardians
  • Observance of religious holidays
  • Emergency or set of circumstances which in the judgement of the schools constitutes a sufficient cause for absence from School.

*All other reasons are considered unexcused absences. Students with unexcused absences will NOT be permitted to make up missed work. All medical or written excuses to cover absenteeism must be turned in to the school within 48 hours of your absence.

Truancy Policy Overview

Below are some quick overview points regarding the truancy policy. To review the entire policy from the online handbook, please click (here). Students must be at school to learn and show what they know. Students who are absent struggle to keep up pace with new material and or remediation and mastery of content suffers greatly.

Guardian Notes for excuses:

  • Guardians can write notes for absences up to 55 hours (example approx. 8 full days)

Habitual Truancy means:

  • being absent 30 or more consecutive hours in one month without a legitimate excuse.
  • being absent 42 or more hours in one month without a legitimate excuse.
  • being absent 72 or more hours in one school year Without a legitimate excuse.

When habitually truant, the district will select members of the AIT (Absence Intervention Team) and make three attempts to secure guardian's participation on the absence intervention team within seven days of the triggering absence.

Excessive Truancy means:

  • 38 or more hours in one school month With or Without a legitimate excuse.
  • 65 or more hours in one school year With or Without a legitimate excuse.

When a student is excessively absent, the district will file a complaint in Juvenile Court. WB will hold mandatory attendance meetings. The meetings/gathering is an attempt to build awareness and reduce parent referrals to the courts.

"When kids are absent for an average of just two days of school per month—even when the absences are excused– it can have a negative impact. These absences can affect kids as early as Kindergarten."
