Week of May 8th 2023

May's Lunch Schedule

*MAP Testing Round 3 one day this week and two days next week

#1 Scheduling Forms Sent Out-. We are in the season now for planning for next year.  Mr. Yannon (8th grade School Counselor) visited our current 7th grade students in order to get them prepared for 8th grade (next year).  Students in 8th grade were given a form to complete regarding scheduling needs and wants. The same concept is true for current 6th graders.  Current 6th graders were given a green schedule form that is also due by May 8th (Monday) and May 15th for upcoming 7th graders (current 6th graders).

In general, students in grades 5 and grade 6 do not have a lot of options.  This changes as students move toward 7th grade as a bit of choice comes into play.  High School, of course, really opens up regarding choice.  If you have any questions about scheduing email:

8th Grade SC---->Chris Yannon chris.yannon@wbwarriors.org

5th-7th Grade SC--->Michael D'Amico michael.d'amico@wbwarriors.org

#2 -Permission Slips Sent home on Wednesday due Tuesday- We have field trip prep underway. Students who are eligible to go on the field trip have been given forms to get signed and get back.  We would like them back by the 15th, which is next Monday.  The cost of the field trip is $0 as the PIE has paid for each eligible students' field trip (around $20 per student).

Student who are not eligible will still need to be in attendance at school on the day of the field trip as this is NOT an unexcused day.  Again, students are eligible if they are under six points (0-5 points) since the start of January.

Dates for the field trip are:

#3 Summer Learning Oppertunity through Mahoning County (ESC)- Summer is a time to relax, swin, fish, and have fun.  Summer also presents space to extend learning or spark interest in a new topic.  The Educational Service Center of East Ohio (Mahoning County) is providing some key information to extend opportunities for students. Link to the flyer

#4 Lady Warriors Summer Basketball Camp-Lady Warrior Basketball Camp flyers were given out at lunch.  If you still need one, please call the school.  The camp is June 12th, 13th, and 14th.  If you have any questions, please contact Walt.Deshields@wbwarriors.org.

#5 Fall Sports-We encourage students in grades 7 and 8 (the grade they will be in during the Fall) to consider being an athlete.  Students can choose from Golf, CC, Football, Cheerleading, and Volleyball.  It is a great way to get involved.  This is the first chance students can play sports for the school.  Grades matter!  Students must be eligible to play.  Eligibility is based on students grades during the 4th nine week!  I have also attached info about middle school (grade 7 and grade 8) Cross Country information from Coach Cederbloom stacey.cederbloom@wbwarriors.org

May's Lunch Schedule

#1 State Testing Update-. Last Week for our Ohio State Testing. We are done with ELA Part 1 and 2.  Last week, we completed 5th grade Science Testing.  This week we have Math testing for 5th, 6th, and 7th on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The kids are working hard to show what they know.  The teachers have been really working all year to address the state benchmarks in order to prepare them properly!

#2 -STEM Night-WB had STEM night on April 26.  We had what looked to be 200 or so people attending.  The students did a great job with all the displays and interactive space.  Students did an awesome job and provide the community with a great snapshot of what they are working on during  STEM classes from K-12 classes.  Go Warrior STEM!

#3 Electronics-Students are allowed bringing cell phones to school.  However, they are NOT allowed to have them in class.  Students must keep them in their locker.  Often when caught, students state they want to be able to communicate with parents/guardians.  I stress to them that they can always come up and call home and that cell phones must be stored in lockers all day from 7:30am-2:45pm as per our policy.  Guardians, also continue to monitor the usage and the amount of NON-School activity on Chromebooks.

#4 -Pre-Physicals and Physical info at WB for Fall Sports-Each year, we have a chance for students to get a physical for free.  For OHSAA, physicals are required for students in grades 7-12 for playing sports.  More information can be found on the WB Website.  Pre-Physicals are the 16th of May; Students need to have the proper documents.  The actual physicals will be done during school as well on May 18th 2023.

#5 Teacher Appreciation Week and PIE-email: PIE will be supporting teacher appreciation week starting on Monday May 8th.  Teachers will have lots of snacks and little treats during the week.  I would like to encourage any family member to send a little positive email about something you appreciate about them throughout the year.  Can't find an email address?  Here is a link to the WB Website. https://www.westbranch.k12.oh.us/district1/staff-directory

April's Lunch Menu

#1 State Testing Update-. We had a great first week as we tested students in grades 5-7 in ELA (part 1 and part 2).  We worked through makeups too.  This week, we will have testing for 5th grade (only) on Thursday and Friday for Science.  The week after that, we finish with Math on May 2nd and May 3rd.

#2 Rope Warrior Visit (PBIS Reward)-(Video)-We have invited national assembly veteran 'The Rope Warrior' to WBMS to show the students his tricks and stunts.  Students who have less than three points will be invited to check out the action on May 3rd during a PM assembly.  Check out the video to get a sense of the ROPE WARRIOR.

#3 Field Trips-Special thanks to Reminder that all students need to be under six points. We have a reset of points in January.  Students who earned more than five points and/or do not have their FINAL FORM complete will not be able to go!

#4 -Raising Grades-Finishing Strong-Students need to work to be in school as much as possible, to complete in/out of class work, and study for assessments.  Students can quickly raise grades by NOT having zeros AND adding some additional quality to their work.  We are in the last leg of the year.

#5 Classes for Next Year-We will be focusing on completing the schedule for next year.  Studnet in grade 6 (rising 7th graders) will have the most choice in classes as the elective offernings open up a bit for them.  Students in grade 4 (rising 5th graders) and grade 5 (rising 6th graders) do not have much choice beside BAND or Choir.  More details will be up on this site as we continue to build toward next year.

#1 New Nine Week/Creates Eligibility for incoming 7th Graders for Fall Sports 2023.- Last Friday was the end of the nine weeks.  Teachers are finalizing grades for the 3rd nine weeks. I have been speaking on the the announcements regarding having students reflect on how things went.  For the things that went well...why did they go well?  For the things that did not go well...why did they not go well.

The fourth nine weeks closes out the school year yet dictates 7th grade and above eligibility for OHSAA and West Branch Schools.  Students must have passing classes the last nine weeks to be able to play sports in the Fall.

We encourage students to have a strong finish to the school year as we close out the 2022/2023 School Year.

#2 Spring Break -We have Spring Break starting on April 6th-April 11th.  Students return on April 12th (Wednesday).  We are excited that students will be spending time with family and friends during this wonderful holiday break.  We have a busy April as we have state testing starting shortly after returning.

#3 State Testing Date Reminder-

#4 7th Grade Dance Information-We will be having our 7th grade dance for our 7th grade (Only) students.  This is a celebration of the year and of being at WBMS.  The cost is $5.00 to get in the door.  This includes free snacks as well.  We usually sell Pizza for a few bucks.  The dance is a wonderful time to create memories and share time with classmates.

#5 First Home Meet on Wednesday April 5th 2023-Come on our to our first MS track meet this Wednesday (day before the break) in order to support our track warriors.  Our first home meet will be against Minerva.

#1 March Madness Week -West Branch Middle School and High School will have round 2 of the March Madness week (see left side for list).  On Monday, we have College Day.  Tuesday is Adam Sandler Day.  Wednesday is Twin Day.  Thursday is Hat/Sunglasses Day, and Friday is Warrior Pride.  Again, these days are goofy, but they let kids partake in a group fun activity.  I am curious what students and teachers will do for Adam Sandler Day.

#2 Student Spring Picture Day is March 28th-Reminder, we have our Spring Pictures on March 28th this week.  This picture day is optional and allows families to get a second round of pictures for the students.  If you are interested, please use your phone to snap the QR code or use order form sent home.  As always, if you have any questions...please reach out to the West Branch Middle School office at 330-938-4300.

#3 Great Homework Routines-West Branch Middle School has limited HW compared to other schools I have been to (and definitely my kids' school).  The best way to attack homework is to have a routine.  One of the best routines is to have students eat a quick snack (if needed) and then complete HW before dinner.  As a parent, it is key to have conversations regarding what is due in each of the core subjects (generally, electives do not have HW often).  It is also important to note that Math Class will be the most consistent HW.  After completing homework shortly after getting home, families now have the night open to spend time together and/or partake in the student activities.  Many students have hobbies from sports to video games.  Again, since the HW is done the night is open to explore great options.

Getting zeros and having missing work is generally what leads to low or failing grades.  Being in school and completing work in school as well as out of school is by far the strongest formula for success.

#4 What Happens at a Truancy Meeting?-I wanted to take a moment to explain the process.  Each public school in Ohio has to follow House Bill 410.  This bill demands that students be in school a certain amount of hours.  Using attendance and a state-based system, families are informed when students miss too many hours (a day is 6.75 hours).  A warning letter is sent home when a certain threshold is reached.  If things continue, there is a formal meeting with the MS Truancy teams focuses on what the problem is from the standpoint of the student, parent, and school.  The team then makes a plan to solve this truancy problem.  The student, family, and school need to follow the plan.  If truancy continues at this point, JJC at Mahoning County is contacted and a caseworker begins a process to ensure that truancy is ends.

#5 Contacting Kids During the Day- We want you to know that students are just a call away.  There is a rise of parents contacting students (and visa versa) on their phones (which are supposed to be in the lockers.  Please know that you can call the school and we can get your student on the phone very quickly as each classroom has a phone.  We can bring your student up to the front to speak with you as well.  We know that communication is key in families.  We want you to know that WBMS has you covered in this area!

#1 Guest Speaker on March 21st-We are welcoming a guest speaker to speak with the students on Internet safety.  We sent home forms that ONLY need to turned in in the student is NOT permitted to go.  We do not need to the forms if they are able to attend this proactive meeting.  Grades 6 and Grade 7 will go in the morning as a group (at HS Auditorium).  5th Grade will also attend on the 21st, but will attend after lunch.  We know that the Internet is full of wonder and educational spaces, but as  we all know....it is full of danger too.

Parent Meeting provided also on March 21st at 7pm in HS Auditorium.

#2 Picture Day on March 28th (Spring)-Some students choose to get Spring pictures as part of documenting the growth that happens in year.  Once again, WB has you covered.  Please check out the Dunlap order form on the left.  Need to find out more?  Please contact WBMS and we will help you with any ordering questions.  Notice there is a little QR code on the image on the left side (below the word ONLINE).  Just simply aim your phone's camera at this and it will take you to the proper place.

#3 Discipline on the Rise + Discipline points-Last week we had an uptick of students in detention.  Normally, HW tends to be the larger contributor.  We now see that there are other aspects too such as being tardy, messing around in the halls/RR, being disrespectful to staff or other students.  Please speak with your student(s) to make sure they understand the importance of being good.

#4 Lost and Found-Students' lost and found is really packed again.  Please review your coat closet and sweatshirt collection to make sure that you are not missing anything.  Between the IS and MS, the rack is nearly busting at the seams.  Remember, as per board policy...unclaimed items are donated.  An easy way to do this is to have students check during lunch as the lost and found rack is in the lunch room.

#5 -Vacations and Missing School- Remember, there are lots of students going on vacation.  It is important to remember that students who are absent for more than 72 hours, will need to have a truancy hearing.  Doctors visits and official documented visits are exempt from this.  I have had to have lots of hearings due to excessive missing of school.

If a student continues to be hours after having a truancy team meeting, the student is then turned over to the JJC in Mahoning County in order to fix the absences.  Please do your best to not miss school as it has a huge affect on students ability to stay current.

#1 Guest Speaker to educate students March 21wst 2023-West Branch School district wanted to team up with national speaker in order to express the dangers of the Internet in a few key areas.

An assembly will be held on Tuesday, March 21st for all 5th-7th grade students on the topic of Sextortion/Internet Safety presented by Alicia Kozakiewicz; motivational speaker, advocate, internet safety expert, survivor, and founder of the Alicia Project.  On the same day (later in the evening) Kozakiewicz will have a parent/guardian meeting at 7pm in the auditorium to present additional information to parents.

Through personal testimony, she shares her story of internet grooming, abduction, and captivity at the hands of an internet predator.

Alicia’s interactive presentation educates and empowers students to make responsible and safe choices online and off. Alicia discusses how to safely use computers, mobile devices, social media, gaming systems, and apps. She may also cover when age-appropriate, topics such as online predators, grooming, sexual assault, cyberbullying, and human-trafficking. Alicia has the unique ability to address these sensitive subjects in an informative, inspirational, and occasionally humorous manner.

Presentations will be delivered in two separate groups by grade level.  (5th)/(6th & 7th).

We will be sending home an 'Opt Out' only permission slip.  We understand that WBMS has a span of grades 5-7.  Grade 6 and 7 will get a presentation together.  Grade five will have one of their own on the 21st of March as well.

We will be sending home the 'Opt Out' only slips in the near future.

#2 Field Trip Information/Cost to attend-Students will be excited to spend a day with friends away from school.  The follow events have been planned.  We are excited to annouce that the fundraisers (current) and other ones this year will allow PIE to cover the cost of each students trip (Normally between $15-$20 each student)

Field Trip Overview Per Grade

*Dates and times and other details will be shared soon.  The field trips wll all be in May and will utalize WB busses and drivers as well as WB teachers to supervise the activities.

#3 Reminder about PBIS Points for Field Trip/Rewards Day-Students are given points for bad choices.  A detention is worth 1 point.  An ISS is worth two points.  An OSS is worth three points.  Students who have more than five points (from January on) will NOT be able to go on the field trip.  Our nine weeks rewards are only based on the points of that nine weeks.  Studnets must have two or less points to participate in the activites.

#4 Final Form and Vacations--We now have nearly all Final Forms completed.  FF is a place to share key information about the school such as medical information as well as who is allowed to pick up the student or who to contact in case of a medical emergency.   All forms must be filled out for students to go on a field trip.

#5 Fees Reminder-There are various ways fees occur in a school.  The ranges or from lunch (not having enough money) to broken equipment.  Please review your fees screen to ensure that you are up to date.

March's Lunch Menu

*Want to buy tickets?  You can still turn in fundraiser slips even though the drawing will continue each day in March.

#1 Behavior-There tends to be a bit of a spike in the Spring with students making choices that are less than ideal.  I will be reminding students of the expectations, the code of conduct, as well as the consequences for not following the rules.  This will be done during the lunch period since all students in each grade level are together.

#2 Fundraiser Drawing-Each morning, I have been pulling a slip our of a box.  I announce the adult name on the slip as well as the student who sold the slip.  I call down the student to get his or her $25 Gift Card.  I take a picture of the student and I take a picture of the slip to send to Anna-Marie Shinn so she can post it on the PIE social media site.  She also sends the GC to the person who won it (adult).  This is a process that will continue during the month of March.  You can see some of the pictures below.  You can also see the March Madness on the left of this page as well.

#3 Next Year-We are working on the schedule in order to have an idea of what classes, periods, and bells will be in place for the 2023/2024 school year.  Incoming 7th graders have the most choice in the building as a rule of thumb.  Mr. Yannon, our 8th grade SC will schedule time to meet with students in order to begin to prepare the master schedule at the HS as well.  As Spring continues, we will be makign movements to prepare for the end of this year and the start of next year.

#4 Activities Left in the School Year--There is still a lot of year left.  We have some key upcoming activities that I wanted to share with you.  Things will be moving quickly.  Fore specific dates, use the menu at the top of this page to view 'Upcoming Events'.

#5.-Ideas-Please let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas regarding how I use this page and share information.  I'd love to hear your thoughts and how you are to move forwards in specific areas.  I value your input and I would to hear more about what you are thinking. Please feel free to reach out with thoughts and information as you see fit.

March's Menu Coming Soon

#1 Fundraiser Almost Done PIE Raffle-We are getting ready to start the Drawings in March (Which is this Wedneday).  Please make sure that you have sold or purchased your ticket or tickets.  Remember, the PIE field trip fundraiser will support students for their MAY field trip.  We will start pulling a name each day in March.  The person who baught the ticket and the student who sold the ticket will win a prize.  Please contact the school with any questions.  You can still purchase tickets once the raffle has started.  The best time is to purchase them BEFORE the Wednesday start time as it increasing your chance on winning.

#2 Summer School -We will have summer school this summer.  Summer School will be for HS and MS students who did NOT pass one or more core class.  Students will be given a chance to earn the credit (HS) or ensure they have passed for grade promotion (MS).  Summer School is a Fees based program.  Although the prices are not yet set, in the past, the prices were $150 per class that needed to be made up during summer school.  Students must attend the Warrior Academy room during summer school in order to get this work done (this is a requirement).

#3 Library-We have adjusted a moved items around in the library.  We are now able in the near future to offer visits via ELA periods.  Thank you for being patient on this while lots of shifting and changing has been in the works in the background.  We encourage students to read every day.  ELA classes have included this concept, but we know that students who read more do better in school.

#4 Fire Drills and Lockdowns-WBMS in conjunctin with WBIS have been conducting various drills throughout the year in order to make sure that students are practiced and ready to go in the case of an event.  We will be adding Tornado drills as per the Spring Season in order to also prepare for a storm-based issue that could occur.

#5.-Call Offs-Please ensure that you are calling in if your student or students are not able to make it to school.  This communication helps us all to understand why the student is not in school.  To do this, please simply call the front office (number below) to report your student off.  Sometimes, we habve students who are not in school for days and we have no record as to their status.  Thank you for the communication in this area.

#1 Parent/Teacher Conference-We have Parent/Teacher conferences this week on Thursday night and there is no school on Friday.  We sent out invites for students for whom teachers had requested a conference with.  I have also invited (and will again) parents/guardians to call in or email Mr. D'Amico to take advantage of this time to have a conversation about progress.  Mr. D'Amico's email is michael.d'amico@wbwarriors.org.  You can also call the school at 330-938-4300 and we can help you that way too.

#2 Outback Ray's Visit Last Friday -We really loved seeing the kids laughing and being on the edge of their seats with our Guest, Outback Ray.  He brought all kinds of animals and taught us about them too.  He did a great job bringing kids down on the floor in order to allow students to pet an animal.  From the kids to the teachers, the MS gym was full of excitement and smiles.  Check out some of the pictures below.

The Assembly was our 2nd Nine Weeks reward for students who had less than 3 negative points for behavior.  Remember, a detention is 1 point, an ISS event is worth 2 points, and an OSS even is worth 3 points.

#3 PIE Fundraiser for Field Trips-We are moving along with our $10 raffle sale held by our MS PIE.  We will take money until the 28th of February. March is the month we pull a name out each day.  Remember, the person on the card and the student who sold it each get a prize (gift card).  Our goal is to raise enough money to pay for everyone's field trip.  I have a picture of the March Prize list on the left. I am also sending a copy to parents too via the ONE CALL text system.  Please consider helping us out on this!  (Thank you!).  If every student only sold two, we would have enough to pay for everyone's field trip!

#4 Congrats Winter Sports -The sports teams (Wrestling, Cheerleading, and Basketball) have had a great season.  We appreciate all the hard work while making WB proud.  A big shout out to the 8th grade girls' BBall team for being the Champions of the league.  Also, 7th grade girls are runner-ups as they lost a close one in overtime on Saturday.  Check out the pictures below.

#5 Detention Update/Tips.-Remember, detentions are a quick reminder to students to do something better.  Many detentions are based on missing homework, tardies, small infractions that continue, and other non-desired behaviors.  When a student is issued a detention by a teacher or the principal, the issuing adult calls home to set up a detention date as students need picked up or dropped off.  Our PM detention options are twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday (2:45pm-3:30pm).  Our AM detention is only offered one day per week on Thursday in the AM from 6:45am-7:30am).  Students who missed detention will be rescheduled (once per school year) wihtout additonal discipline.  For those who have missed already, students are issued additional detentions too.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Our goal is for students to make great choices NOT to get detentions to begin with.

#1 Outback Ray will visit WBMS-PBIS Reward day on Friday at 1:30pm.  We have a guest visiting WBMS to reward students (with less than three points for the nine weeks).  Great work to everyone for great work.  Since we are in a new nine weeks, students' points start over for the third nine weeks for the nine weeks reward.  This is true to the third nine weeks as we just started the third nine weeks.

#2 Reset of Discipline Points -In order to move students forward, we are resetting discipline yearlong points.  Starting tomorrow Monday (Feb. 6th 2023) students are at zero points for the year.  This is ONLY for the collection of yearlong points.  Reminder students must remain below six points for the rest of the year (from now until May when the field trips are) in order to be eligible to go on the field trip.  Please have a discussion with your student(s).  Remember, detentions are 1 point each.  ISS is 2 points per event.  OSS is 3 points per event.  Please let me know if you have any directions.

#3 Winter Sports Update-We have had a great season.  Congrats to the cheerleaders, basketball players, and wrestlers.  Great work and you did a wonderful job representing West Branch.  As competition moves into post season congrats to the teams as they compete a few more times!

#4 Lunch Tips -Please encourage students to check in with you regarding how lunch is going.  Students are eating food from the cafeteria or bringing it in.  Students are able to go up at the end of the period to buy extras too.  Please let me know if students are having any issues with eating or social issues.  We want lunch to be relaxing and a time to socialize for students.  Please contact me if there are any concerns or other issues.  Link to lunch menu for February.

#5 Parent/Teacher Conference.-We have parent/teacher conference coming on February 16th.  The letters are being sent out from teachers requesting meetings.  For parents/guardians, please contact to reserve a slot.  Again, parents/guardians are encouraged to reach out to Mr. D'Amico at michael.d'amico@wbwarriors.org with requests for conferences in order to make collective plans to help students.  We are looking forward to seeing all the families on the night of the conferences.

*New Nine Weeks Starts Tomorrow (Monday).  This is also the start of the 2nd Semester too.

*Mr. D'Amico went to lunches on Thursday to show students how to check their schedule (students brought Chromebooks in order to be ready)

#1 New Nine Weeks/New Semester Starts -Monday is the first day of the new nine weeks (3rd) as well as the new semester (2nd).  Please use this time to reflect on educational gains, assessments, MAP updates, and other key information.  I will be stressing grade reflection and learning goals during morning announcements.  Students will now have a few different electives.  Students will start over with a new and fresh grade in each class.  Grades reflect level of mastery.  Students tend to grow grades based on understanding as well as completing practice and prep work.  The opposite is true too.

#2 PIE Fundraiser Update - As a reminder, we are currently having a sales campaign for PIE in order for them to support our field trips for our students.  The funds will offset or even pay for the entire field trip for the students able to attend (those who do not have too many points from bad decisions).  The concept is centered around having a drawing each day in March.  Each day has an associated gift card worth $50, $100, and even one for $150.  The cost is $10 per card.  The more cards you buy the more your chances to win goes up.  The nice thing it is not a ONE and DONE.  We appreciate all the support for this project and how it will positively affect the kids!

#3 PBIS Points Start Over Monday (for the nine weeks)-Each nine weeks, we collect points of students who have some blunders such as detentions, in and out of school suspensions.  PBIS rewards positive behaviors with events/activities and slushy drinks.  Each nine weeks it starts over.  However, the field trip eligibility hinges on having less than six combined points for the year.  Detentions are 1 points, ISS is 2 points, and OSS is 3 points.

#4 Final Forms -We are now halfway through the year.  However, we still have a few families who have NOT filled out final forms.  There have been reminders and All-Calls, but we have a group of students that still need an update on this critical information.  Starting this week, I will be reaching out to families in order to make a plan to get this completed.  Please reach out if you need to come in to office to get help to get it completed.

We need the medical aspect to include key information regarding to pickups and other critical information.  Failure to update this information will result in students NOT being able to attend field trips.

#5 Grades, Summer School, and Promotion to next grade.-Mr. D'Amico and I will be creating a new document used to focus on a plan for those students who are moving in a challenging direction regarding grades and overall progress in classes.  We will be teaming up to find a few new ways to communicate and align ourselves with the parents/guardians to help students realign themselves in a class or in classes.  The goal is to move students so that they can fill gaps and skills without having to have retention talks/Summer School talks.

Summer school starts directly after school is over. SS is designed to fill gaps and give students a chance to address skills that has have been weak.  SS is Monday-Friday in person in the Warrior Academy Lab at the high school.

*New last day of school for studnets in grades K-11 is June 1st due to the need for state required teacher training.

#1 PIE Raffle Fundraisr and Goal For Money -PIE Fundraiser Overview and Goal for funding.  You by now have noticed (and started helping) that PIE selling raffle tickets.  PIE collected 31 or more donations for gift cards that will be given daily based on a raffle.  The cost to get in is $10 per card with your name on it.  The more you buy the more chances you have to win.  Each day during March, we will pull out a random name and present the winning gift card ($50-$150) to the individual picked.  Also, each day the student who sold to the winner gets a $25 gift card too!

The goal of this fundraiser is to fully pay for (if possible based on fundraiser earnings) the upcoming WBMS field trips in May.  All MS students were given the information in order to be part of the fundraiser.  Please call the MS with any questions.

#2 New Semester/Nine Weeks Overview- We about to arrive at the end of the 2nd nine weeks, which is also the end of the 1st semester.  Actually, for 5th and 6th graders...it also ushers in the end of the 2nd cycle in their four-pack of electives as well.  Grades will be posted soon.  Please take this time to review how the year has been going as we are officially halfway through.  Soon, we will have parent teacher conferences to be able to have some meaningful conversations.

#3 PBIS Reward Event for those with Less than 3 points for 2nd Nine weeks-WBMS has invited Outback Ray to come visit with with menagerie of unique animals on February 10th 2023 during an assembly in the large gym at 1:30pm.  As the 2nd nine weeks award, students with less than three points for the 2nd nine week will be able to participate in the events in order to share some fun yet learning moments with classmates.  Outback Ray will be sharing information about animals and will even give some students a chance to interact with the creatures.  We are looking forward to this fun event.

#4 Parent/Teacher Conferences -Believe it or not, we are already moving toward having parent teacher conference later in February.  Please mark your calendar for X as we invite you to make an appointment with teachers you have questions for and/or want to continue to team up with in order to better reach your students

#5 Attendance, Sick Notes, Vacation, and HB410.-We want to encourage students to attend school as much as possible as missing school really makes it hard to have continuity in subject matter.

Also, please call off students when they are not at school.  Many times, we do not get calls.  Please keep us in the loop as the why a student is not in school with a quick phonecall.

*ELA MAP Test this week and Makeups from last week

BIG CONGRATS TO the Winner of the MS Spelling BEE

***Stella Zippay (8th grade).  Stella will compete in Youngstown this Spring**

Lyla Myers (7th Grade) runner Up/Alternate

#1 ELA MAP Test on Tuesday/Make-Ups Wed/Thur-We will be finishing our last MAP test on Tuesday in the AM for our round two.  Again, the goal is to compare students 'data' from the Fall (Oct.) to the data we have collected over the last few weeks.  Teachers will take the data and review what needs to be done in order to grow students as we prepare for the state tests and learning in general.  As a reminder, the MAP test consists of ELA, Math, and Science.  The state tests in April measure all students in ELA and Math.  The state tests also measure 5th grade (only) students in science.

We will be doing make ups for students who were absent during one or more of the tests.  These tests will start in the AM and will take place in the library.

#2 The Dentist is Coming to School on Feb. 3rd 2023- We have a mobile dentist visiting WBMS.  Forms were sent home the other day.  The program is called Ohio Dental Outreach.  Please contact our nurse Beth Hall (call the middle school and we will transfer the call).  Forms are due by Jan. 23rd to the Middle School.  For more information, please visit www.myschooldentist.com.  This program is also supported by the ADA (American Dental Association).

#3 Bus Reminders regarding stops and behavior on Bus-I wanted to make a reminder that students must be at their bus stop before the bus arrives.  If a driver has to wait for each student, the bus route will be pretty far behind by the end of the run.  This information was shared in a letter sent home at the start of the year (see it on the left).  This is part of the Ohio Administrative Code 3301-83-08.  The code reads that "All students be prepared to board the bus 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive".  Students should be at the stop around 15 feet from the curb and not on the porch or walking down the drive as the bus approaches.

Also, WB School rules do apply on the bus.  Students should ensure they are following all rules in order for the driver to provide a safe transport to school.

#4 Tardies-We are having an increase in Tardy Warnings as well as detentions for having six or more.  Students get two detentions for nine.  ISS is part of future tardies.  I wanted to remind everyone that tardies do NOT start over as they grow during the year.  Each district has a policy to deal with students missing hours as per the HB410.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the policy and the reaction ot the policy.

#5 Upcoming Field Trip and PIE's plan to help pay-We are excited to be ready to announce the field trips soon as some of the final steps are being put in place.  5th, 6th, and 7th are each doing to a different location and will have different activites.  Of course, the cost is something to consider.  We are teaming up with PIE to help pay for most or all of the trip (that is the goal).  You will soon hear about a fundraiser that is very similar to the one the ELC and IS conducted where tickets are purchased and a 'drawing' each day is conducted to see who wins a gift card of $50 and up.  We will be doing this fundraiser in March (selling in Feb).  We are excited for this as it can offset or fully pay for the field trip (fingers crossed).

I do want to remind everyone that students who have earned more than five points will not be able to attend the field trip.

*No School NEXT Monday for MLK Day

#1 MAP Testing-We have three upcoming tests: Science, Math, and ELA.  These 'Round Two' tests will allow teachers to compare where students are now vs. where they were during 'Round One' in October.  Our October baseline data provides a start that we will compare data with currently.  These tests are something West Branch implemented to better reach kids.  Teachers will use this data to see how teaching can be adjusted and subgroups can be grown based on skills deficiencies.  Our MAP testing will be Monday for Science and Thursday this week for Math.  We will be on an adjusted schedule.  Students arrive and leave school at the same time.  Next week, we have MAP ELA on Tuesday (No School on Monday for MLK Day).

#2 Spelling Bee- Tuesday January 10th at 8:00am in the Middle School Gym.  Parents are welcome to see their student(s) compete in the first Spelling Bee since Covid.

In more than three years, students who have earned the right to challenge themselves to 'spell with the best' that WBMS has to offer.  ELA teachers have been creating chances in class to 'spell' qualify to compete with the 2022/2023 Spelling Bee.  Former WB Superintendent Dr. Weingart and a team of judges will be looking for the best speller between grades 5-8.  After finding the winner, I will share who it is as well as the next steps for the WBMS Champion.

#3 Being Absent and Returning-We are almost midway through the school year.  Sickness, appointments, and other issues have caused some to start racking up 'missed days'.  Remember, House Bill 410 established specific house required to be in school.  There are thresholds that warrant a response if crossed.  All school must have an absence plan that is acted upon if said thresholds are crossed.

It is important that students are in school.  Taking a vacation, for example, when students are racked up a lot of missed hours will only add to lower grades and the potential of having to go through this process.  When students are absent from a sickness, it is important to bring a note from the doctor.  Parents/guardians are ONLY allowed to write an excuse for 10 times in a school year.

#4 New Semester-We have a new semester coming on Monday Jan. 30th.  This day is also the start of the 3rd nine weeks.  With report cards being prepped to be released on Parent Access, most elective teachers are working to finish up content as a new group of students will arrive on the first day of the new semester.  5th and 6th grade 4-pack elective teachers will also get a new group of students as students get a new elective every nine weeks.  Please encourage students in yearlong, semester, and nine weeks classes to makeup any work that is missing.

#5 Those in Need-Each year we collect food at Thanksgiving with our annual food drive, but human needs are not just isolated to Thanksgiving.  We have several systems in place at West Branch to help our families in need.  Please consider contributing at various times during the year.  Every little bit helps!

We have the food pantry year-round.  The food pantry gets its food from donations yearlong.  There are several avenues this happens to ensure that each Friday students can go home with food to help sustain life.  At the Middle School, our nurse (Beth Hall) helps to sort, pack, and distribute meals for families each week.  Although some students might not notice, there are handfuls of kids that take a few bags home with them on the bus in order to support their family.  We also have the clothing closet (housed at the High School) to help kids have nice clothes to wear as money can be a challenge and kids grow out of items so fast.  Do you have nicely used WB clothing items (or any items in good shape) that you would donate?  Please contact WBMS in order to make a plan.  Thank you for considering both the food pantry and the clothing closet.

#1 Welcome Back for 2023-I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year as we welcome in 2023.  It has been a great school year so far.  We have been focusing on reaching kids in new ways using data as our foundation.

We are looking forward to the rest of the year for sure.  We have so much more to learn and do at WBMS.  We have MAP testing coming up in January as we get our second look at how kids are growing (first round was in Oct.).  We will be testing in school.  We will test Science on Jan. 9th.  Jan. 12th we will be testing Math. The last test date of round two of MAP will be on January 17th with ELA.  Once we have conducted the testing (we will send home the family report for you to review the growth your student(s) have made).  We have our Spelling Bee on January 10th in the AM.

We have upcoming PBIS reward number two for students who earned less than three discipline points during the 2nd semester.  We are looking at bringing in someone with animals to educate and entertain the students.  We will have Ohio State Testing in AprilMay brings in Field Trips (provided students are able to go due based on discipline points) and Field Day.

#2 PBIS and Discipline Points-My goal is to decrease bad choices using our P.R.I.D.E. acronym.

P-Perseverance "Keep Going"

R- Responsibility- "Own You Actions"

I-Integrity "Do What's Right"

D-Discipline "Use Self-Control"

E-Empathy "Care for Others"

Students earn negative points based on discipline.  For example, students get one point for each detention and two points for each ISS.  Students who earn OSS earn three points.  Each nine weeks we have an activity for those who have not earned more than three points in the nine weeks.  For the Field Trips, our PBIS committee has decided that students who have earned less than five points total will be eligible to attend the field trip.

#3 New West Branch District Website-West Branch School has launched a new website.  The goal is to make navigating it easier.  WB also wanted to provided a clean site that is nice to look at and clearly shares all the good things going on in the district.  Please be patient as we work to adjust and tweak its functionality.

#4 Two Hour Delay Information-As we are now deep into the Winter season in Northeast Ohio, please know that weather could be an issue moving foward.  If a 2-Hour Delay is called for WB, please know that everything just adjusts by two hours.  The start of school is at 9:30am instaed of 7:30am.  Students would start getting dropped off in the back starting at 9:00am.  Students will go to the cafeteria until the bell releases them at 9:15am.  The busses will unload in the front at 9:15am.  Classes start at 9:30am.  The school day classes are adjusted in order to fit all the classes in (with reduced time).  Lunch, however, is not adjusted and will remain 30 minutes.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You will find out about 2-Hour delays based on a ONE CALL from our Superintendent Mrs. Egli.  Many local  news stations (for example WFMJ) also share this information too.

#5 PIE WBMS Fundraier- WBMS PIE continues to look for ways to raise money to support students.  Stay tuned in the near future for this activitty as it is similar to the younger student PIE event where tickets are sold for a drawing each day in March.  Reminder, PIE focuses on support students and providing opportunities during and outside the school .

#1 Christmas Store starts on Tuesday through Friday-Students will be able to visit the store starting Tuesday through Friday of next week.  Please check out the pictures and a huge thanks to all who have donated to the store.  Students are able to buy new or slightly used items for a very low price.  The MAD Club has been prepping this event and all funds go to support the MAD club (a club for 5th-7th graders who give back to the school).

#2 Lost and Found (mostly lost)-As you can see from the picture on the left, the lost and found is 98% lost.  Please encourage your student to collect missing items on the rack found in the cafeteria.  During the Christmas Break, items will be donated.  Again, please ensure that you ask you student to check this area.

#3 Christmas Music up and Running This Week-W

--->5th Grade Concert Starts at 6:00pm (students arrive at 5:30pm) (Take seat Auditorium)

--->Warrior Explosion Starts at 6:45pm (students arrive at 5:30pm) (Will wait in HS Cafeteria)

--->6th Grade Concert Starts at 7:30pm (students arrive at 6:30pm) (Take seat in Auditorium)

#4 Chromebook Tips-We have filters and also GoGuardian to help ensure students are in safe places online.  Please note that there is a bit of rise on students going to a proxy in order to try to get around the filters.  Many are using this for games.  A few are using it in other ways.  If you feel that your students has not earned trust at home yet, please have the student use the Chromebook in an open area that is supervised.  Please let me know if you have any other issues at home with the Chomebook and we can work through it.

#5 Field Trips-Our PBIS team met to work through ideas about Field trips.  We are excited to offer these in May.  Once our locations are locked, I will be announcing where we are going.  We are looking to be somewhat local.  Field trips are a time to see or do something different while hanging out with friends outside of the school setting.

Remember, only students who have not earned too many points in the calendar year to attend. Right now, our cut score is less than five points.  Remember, detentions are 1 points, ISS is 2 points, and OSS is 3 points.

#1 12 Days of Christmas Starts Monday -We are once again participating in the 12 dcays of Christmas.  Each day starting on Dec. 5th, students and staff have a chance to 'dress the theme' for the day.  Please find this image on the left to help guide you.  Christmas is a great time of year and we hope the '12 days of Christmas' will usher in a proper Yuletide cheer.

#2 Christmas Store for WBMS-As with tradition, we will be starting our Warrior Christmas Store soon (December 13th-16th).  Students will be able to visit the store during lunch periods.  The store is a fundraiser for MAD Club.  The way the store works is students purchase items there were donated by staff or the community.  The items are priced extremely fairly in order for students to surprise friends and loved ones with items.  The store is ran by Mr. D'Amico and his MAD Club members and gives them experience with managing transactions and inventory.  If you have any NEW or lightly used items you would like to donate, please send them to the school with your student.  Items are generally small in nature and include knickknacks, collectables, or other decorations.

#3 Holiday Events at WBMS-We at WBMS are getting ready for some great holiday events.  Our choirs and bands and sharpening up and getting ready to show you what the holiday is all about.

#4 Sending a Candy Cane for $1-Student Council will be selling messages attached to Candy Canes.  Students will be able to purchase a message for $1 that says who it is from and who it is to as well as a quick message.  Students will be able to give a quick holiday cheer to someone.  This fun activity will be part of a fundraiser for student council and will also help to provide holiday cheer as well.  We will be talking about this with students over announcements and we will start the sale next week.

#5 Questions, Concerns, etc-I say it every week, but I do want to invite anyone to take a minute a drop me a line for questions, concerns, or even ideas you have.  My weekly update is designed to ensure that you are ready to go for the week.  I am hoping that each are able to take a moment to read or watch the quick 'five things' in order to make you and your student(s) feel comfortable for any events we have for the week.  My goal is to always be on the 'front foot' in order to not have you seek out answers in social media groups, sites, or other places that might not have current or accurate information.

#4 Checking your Grades-This is something I put on here often.  All students can check grades often.  It is easy for them and they all know who to do it.  If fact, many teachers are now making this part of the class period once a week.  As a parent/guardian, it is key to stay in the loop.  Logging in is easy.  Need to know how to get started?  Please contact WBMS and we will help you during the process.  Grades change quickly.  Grades represent where students are now.

#0 Food Drive-Thank you for your generosity.  We were able to collected an amazing amount of food.  Between the Middle School and the Intermediate School, WB students help collect nearly 3,000 items!  This is amazing.  As you can see, this yearly Student Council activity was very successful yet again for the 2022 season.  Thanks for Mr. D'Amico and his student council helpers as well as Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Handy for organizing the counting the items.  We are happy to help students understand how important it is to give back and support those in need.  Our next steps would be preparing baskets for families in need in our community so that they can enjoy time with family during our upcoming holiday season.

#1 New Nine Weeks for PBIS Points (2nd nine weeks reward) -We celebrated our first nine weeks PBIS assembly Friday with a Dodgeball Tournament.  Students competed with each other (grade level).  We now have a winning homeroom for 5th, 6th, and 7th grade.  I will take a picture of each group tomorrow at lunch and provide them with a quick 'treat'.

Each nine weeks, students return to zero points regarding PBIS points.  As a reminder, each detention is worth 1 point and each ISS is worth two points.  OSS are three points each.  We will be having an 'end of the nine weeks' activity after the 2nd nine weeks too.  A handful a students did have to sit out and not attend the dodgeball on Friday due to have too many points (3) during the first nine weeks.

*For the field trips, there is a cut score (total) for all nine weeks.  Our PBIS committee are right now looking at 5 points (combined) for the year.  Students with that many points CAN'T attend the grade level field trip.

#2 Warrior of the Week (how it works)-Each Friday, we announce the new student of the week for the building. Each grade level has ONE student of the week each week.  Teachers are actually the nominating individuals.  Teachers pay attention to continued good choices such as kindness, focus, helping, and other positive attributions.

Besides announcing the names, we also share (building-wide) the kind words from the teachers regarding the student of the week winner.   Also on Friday, Mr. Yeagley and Mr. D'Amico visit the students' classroom and clap them out into the hall where they get a picture (see example on the left), a certificate, as well as a T-Shirt.

On Tuesday, we are all wearing our past and present 'STUDENT OF THE WEEK' t-shirts to school.

#3 Drop Off/Pick Up in the back lot-There is one drop off in the back of the MS in the AM from 7:00am-7:29am (school starts at 7:30am).  After school, we have two pick up points that include the back gate (Ellett Road) and the front gate (Main Street).  Parents and guardians have a choice as to which one to use.  The back gate pickup does cross-over a bit with Intermediate parents/guardians waiting to pick up students.  Students who are not picked up are taken to the front office to call home.  Students wait inside the office until a parent/guardian picks them up.

#4 HB410 Absences, Tardies, Notes-Attendence has been going pretty well this year so far.  However, as time goes on it is important to remind families of a few items.  First, students are tardy if they are NOT in class (in the seat) for first period.  After six tardies, students earn a detention.  After nine tardies, students earn two more detentions.  After that, the dicipline continues to grow. It is important to note that tardies DO NOT reset after each nine weeks and instead builds throughout the year.  Students must bring in NOTES if they are absent.  Students are ONLY able to bring in 10 parent/guardian notes all year.  However, notes from a medical provider and other official absences are always excused, so it is important to always bring in these items.

#5 Checking Grades-We are in week two of the new nine weeks.  Please start early at looking at grades.  Are there missing assignments?  Do you notice a trend?  What goes well and what is a pattern of point loss?  Students are checking grades at school.  Many teacher now add this into the weekly activity.  Please include this fuction at home too.

#3 New Classes for 5th and 6th Graders-We are starting a new nine weeks this Monday.  For many students, not much will change (this is fully true for our 7th grade students).  For our 5th and 6th grade students, a new elective is waiting to be explored.  I hope you learned  a bunch from the first nine weeks.  5th and 6th graders get a new elective as they are part of the 4-Pack of electives.

(In no particular order)

#4 Grades-New nine weeks reflection.  Students and families should reflect on the first nine weeks regarding learning point.  How did things go?  What worked and what did not.  This is a great time to present solutions to problems that came up the first nine week.  Having academic discussions is such as great way to open up communication and provide insight into your students' days at school as they work on goals i

#Red Ribbon Week -WBMS are taking part in Red Ribbon Week this week, which is celebrated annually October 23-31, and is the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program.  We encourage all students to participate and reflect upon the topic each day.

#2 Oct. 24th/25th Book Fair during ELA Classes-This week (Monday and Tuesday) students will be visiting the library to shop the book fair.  The book fair helps to celebrate the idea of reading and provides students with choice and variety to purchase.  Please visit https://www.scholastic.com/bf/wbmslibrary

Parents/guardians can even set up an eWallet to prepay or provide money that students can use instead of having to carry cash, check, or credit card.  Special thanks to the IS parents who are running the book fair for both the IS and the MS.

Again, students will visit the book fair during a schedule time with their ELA Teachers.

#3 PBIS Rewards Day Nov. 11th 'Dodge Ball Tournament'-PBIS is a positive way to reward students who have not earned over the threshold of points for discipline.  Detentions are 1 point, ISS is two points , and OSS is three points.

On Nov. 11th during a PM Assembly, student who earned 0-2 points will be able to attend and/or participate in a dodgeball tournament.  Winning teams will ultimately face 'The Teachers' to earn the right to be the WBMS Dodgeball Champions for the 2022/2023 school year.  Students who earned more than three points will not be able to attend the event and will instead be in a classroom with a teacher.

#4 Correction: Fall Sports Banquet Small Group Only-I wanted to make a correction as after talking to the coaches, teams wanted to celebrate in small groups with their team.  Some teams have already had a pizza party or a gathering while others plan to do so.  The original goals was to return to pre-covid awards night, but teams decided for a more focused local one.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

#5 Veteran's Day Assembly on Nov. 10th at WBMS GYM at 8:00am-Thank you to all our community and staff veterans.  WBMS will be bringing back our assembly at 8:00am.  We are excited to honor those who have so much for our freedoms.  Please join us in a powerful presentation in the middle school gym.  Please contact me at jayson.yeagley@wbwarriors.org with any questions.

(Lunch Menu Link)

#1Parent/Teacher Conference -We will be having our Parent/Teacher conference this Thursday from 3:00pm-8:30pm (last conference to start at 8:15pm).  This is a time to work through concerns in order to team up home and the school to work together for a common goal.  Please email Mr. D'Amico (michael.d'amico@wbwarriors.org) if you would like to add a conference.  Letters were sent home last Tuesday for meetings requested at the teacher-level.  Parents/Guardians can also request a conference.  We have a dinner time for teachers blocked out from 5:00pm-5:45pm that night.

#2 Book Fair Coming to WBMS -We will be sending home a flyer and a place to visit (website) to check out what to expect when visiting the Book Fair.  Please visit https://www.scholastic.com/bf/wbmslibrary

Parents can even set up an eWallet to prepay or provide money that student can use instead of having to carry cash, check, or credit card.

We are excited to have Scholastic's Book Fair for the Middle School on Oct. 24th and Oct. 25th.  ELA have a schedule to visit the book fair on one of those days during their class (brought down by teacher).  Students are encouraged to consider purchasing a book or two as this celebrates reading with choice.  We do discourage students to bring money to spend of toys and other non-book options.  Many parents do NOT want students to buy little gimmicky items (our fair is mostly the book fair).  Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

#3 Halloween Dress Up Overview-Reminder, we are going to allow middle school students to dress up on Oct. 31st.  Students are encouraged to have fun and be creative in their outfit.  Students need to keep in mind that they can't wear hoods, masks, blood, or even have weapons.  If a student is confused or have questions...please have them direct them at myself.

#4 Fall Sports Awards Evening-We are excited to bring back the awards assembly for student who played a sport for grades 7/8.  The event will start at 6:00pm.  Coaches will reach out to their team to let them know how early to arrive (athlete).  We will recognize and honor the student athletics organized by team.  After the assembly, we will enjoy a cookie social in the cafeteria.  Parents of athletes are asked to bring some cookies or deserts to share.

#5 MAP Scores/OST Results Sent home last week-We sent home some scores for the MAP Test (ELA, Math, and Science) for students.  We would like you to look at these and review with your students where they are strengths as well as weaknesses.  The same is said about the Ohio State Tests we conducted in the Spring of 2022.  Both scores help to show were students are and were they need to be to grow.  Teachers are using this data to inform their focus and instruction for students.

Five Things in Five Minutes

[Week of October 3rd 2022]

#1 Grades, Attendance, Parent/Teacher Conf. -We have a great system for students and guardians to check grades.  On the student side, students are able to easily login a check grades and attendance at anytime.  We encourage students to do this often as it is very helpful for them to have a current and realistic view of their current grades and hours of schools missed.

Guardians are encouraged to do the same.  Guardians will need an access code (many have this set up from the past and already have easy access).  If don't have a code or forget it, please email denise.elder@wbwarriors.org for a new access code.  We feel that communication of assessments, grades, and attendance is a the core of what is important.  Grades and attendance also correlate with each other as missing school most always negatively affects grades.  Please review grades often and have a conversation.

Finally, parent/teacher conference will be on October 20th from 3:00pm-8:30pm (last appointment is at 8:15pm).  Please email Mr. D'Amico (School Counselor) to set up an appointment for parent/teacher conferences.  Please call or email him.  His email is michael.d'amico@wbwarriors.org  and his number is 330-938-4300.  We will have more information on this as we get closer.  We do not have school on Friday October 21st 2022.

#2 WBMS 'Stay After' Oct. 7th-We are having our stay after THIS Friday for all students in grades 5-7.  WBMS PIE put on Stay After.  To participate, students have a form to complete (Click Here for Link).  Also, a paper copy has been sent home.  The cost is $5.00.  This event is a fundraiser for PIE.  Remember, PIE supports students in various ways and supports the teachers and building in general.  We will be selling some food as part of the fundraiser too.

Students will 'Stay After' school until 5:00pm.  Students will need picked up a 5:00pm as this year we are NOT including the game as part of the activity.  Our Varsity Football team plays in Alliance.

#3 Homework Update-Homework is a key part of learning.  WBMS does not 'slam' our students with lots of homework, but our HW is an important concept.  Homework is a time to prep for a new topic, practice a new skill, or prep for an assessment.  As of now, we have had around 10 detentions for the entire school year.  Of the 10, six of them are due to not having homework completed (usually more than three times).  Please take a look at your students' grades in order to see if HW is dipping grades a bit.  Please have a discussion with your students if HW is pulling down grades.

#4 Field Trips in Late Spring-WBMS is returning to Field Trips this Spring (May).  Since Covid, we have not had a field trip.  The locations for each grade and dates have not been confirmed as of now.  This information will be announced soon and will include the student cost associated with each trip.

Students need to maintain a good standing in order to be able to go on a Field Trip in May.  As part of our PBIS program, we collect points on students based on discipline.  Each detention is 1 point each; ISS is 2 points each; OSS is 3 points each.  Students who have collected a certain number of points will NOT be able to attend a field trip due to ongoing struggles with behaviors and other negative choices.

#5 Halloween and Dressing Up-WBMS will allow students to dress up at school on Monday Oct. 31st 2022.  Students are NOT allowed wearing masks.  We want to encourage creativity when choosing an outfit, but students can't have blood or carry weapons (fake or real).  I will be announcing this information as we get closer to the day of the event.  Please encourage your student(s) to ask me if he or she has any questions.

[Week of Sept. 26th 2022]

*Red Ribbon Week is this week!

#1 Start with Hello Week -WBMS is spending the week with events that help to keep students safe and aware.  The events are listed 'ABOVE' the WB symbol on the left.  Students will work on learning to be friendly to each other while staying safe.  On Wednesday, students will wear green as a symbol of unity with the Sandy Hook Promise.  Thursday students focus on the important concept of 'See Something Say Something' in order to help keep a safe school.

#2 Map Testing Monday (Tomorrow)-WBMS will continue with MAP testing on Monday with the Science test.  Students will arrive and leave school at the normal time.  We will be on a two hour delay tomorrow and again for the last test (Math) in these series in the Fall.

#3 Picture Day on September 29th (Thursday)-It is that time again to put on your best clothes and get ready to smile big.  Capturing memories are so important.  WBMS is having picture day on Thursday of this week.  We sent home the order forms last week (paper copy).  On the left, we also have a link for you to order online too.  Notice the Access Code is 22WBMS.  We are starting the pictures at 7:30am.

#4 Club Options-WBMS has a few clubs that students can get involved in.  Getting involved in the school is very beneficial for the student as well as the school.  Our clubs include MAD Club, Student Council, and Environmental Club.

*MAD Club=Grades 5-7. MAD stands for Make A Difference.  The club ONLY meet during the school day.  Students meet a few times per month and work through supporting students and teachers in various positive activities.  This is a great club for kids to get into and is a great introduction to the idea of service.  Advisor is Mr. D'Amico.

*Student Council=Grades 5-7. Student Council is a service organization that takes the concept of MAD a bit further.  The group gathers after school (scheduled) to meet and plan together regarding ways to support the school, district, and community.  The Advisor is Mr. D'Amico

*Environmental Club=Grades 5-7.  The Environmental Club focuses on ways to act locally to improve the Earth.  This active club provides service as well as get education about Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  There are great actives planned this year to build on what we have done.  There are after school actives and meetings (scheduled).  The Advisor is Mr. McCracken.

#5 Progress Book and Checking Grades-We encourage guardians to check on Progress Book often.  Progress Book provides direct access to student assessments.  Also, there is direct access to hours/days missed.  Logging in a checking in is a key way to support your student(s).  This process also helps to have more natural and specific conversations about school.  Instead of saying, "How was school today (just to get the generic response of "Good")...guardians will now be able to ask questions such as, "Tell me a little about the assessment you did really well in Math..."  Please let me know if you have any questions or if you have problems logging in.

#1 MAP Testing and Pep Rally Friday -*

*Every student needs a pair of headphones/earbuds for the Map tests.

We have MAP testing in ELA, Science, and Math over the next 10 days.  MAP helps to see where students are and helps to determine where they need to go academically.  Teachers value this data and helps them to make plans to address concerns.  We are doing the testing three times during the school year.

MAP tests happen during the school day.  Students arrive and leave at the same time as normal.  However, we adjust the bell schedule to help us ensure a uniformed time for students to complete the tests.  Again, the goal of these tests are to provide insights into where the students are in regard to where they should be.  The additional tests will help to monitor growth from the tests we are about to take.

Students are encouraged to do their best on them.  Know that there are no grade points related, but the tests start to give data on where the students would be if the Ohio State Tests were now.

#2 Drinking Fountains Officially Open- Drinking fountains are now open and ready to be used.  Testing came back and we were given the full green light to open the fountains.  Fountains started opening midday on Friday.  As of tomorrow (Monday), all fountains will be ready to use.  Regarding bringing water, students are able to bring water in a bottle of sorts.  Remember, students are only allowed to bring water around to classes (Students bring lunches with juice, sports drinks, or other items...which is fine for lunch).

#3 Stay After Oct 7th 3:00pm-5:00pm-Each year, we have a Fall 'Stay After' for grades 5, 6, and 7.  The 'Stay After' is organized and presented by WBMS P.I.E. and will be Oct. 7th 2022.

The cost of the event is $5.  We will be sending a form home very soon that will need to be returned with the money.  The day before the event (Oct. 6th) (or the day of the event) we will put a wrist band on the students in order to show that they paid.  The event will take place at the MS outside by the large gym.  We will be having fun events for students to do while hanging with friends and classmates.

#4 School Pictures-We are having school pictures on September 29th in the AM.  On the right, you will see some info regarding picture day (now with Dunlap Photography).

Please look at the top of this page for a link and some information for the pictures.  We will be sending home a paper this week for packages, pricing, and other information.  Again, we are having Fall pictures on the 29th 2022.  Get ready to smile and show your Sunday best!

#5 Absent Notes from Guardians-This year, we want to continue to build great attendance.  Guardians have 10 notes in a school year regarding being marked 'Excused'.

Dr. Notes and other official appointments with various providers will be 'Excused' as long as there is a note provided before or after the absence.

Also, reminder that tardies add up.  Students only get 5 tardies WITHOUT discipline.  Please check out the chart below.

6 Tardies = 1 detention

9 Tardies = 2 detentions

12 Tardies = In School Suspension or Saturday School and referral to the Absence Intervention Team/possible referral to juvenile court

Five Things in Five Minutes

[Week of Sept. 11th 2022]

#1 Up and Running/Final Forms! -We had an awesome start to the year.  Kids located classes, opened lockers, and found a great group of educators waiting for them with big smiles.  Please check out some of the pictures on the side and below to illustrate some of the activities going on at WBMS during the first week.  I am looking forward to a full week!

My goal is communicate clearly with all of you.  I do everything to work toward having you NEVER have to go to SOCIAL MEDIA to find answers.  Please me know if you have any questions, ideas, and concerns you want to share with me.  You send your 'best thing' to school each day and we want to keep them safe, happy, and ready to learn.

#2 Water Bottles Only for Now (Unfortunately), we are working through some testing to ensure that the fountains are ready to go after sitting idle for a few years during covid.  I will contact you when we are up and running.  For now, please ensure that students bring water bottles to have some fresh water to help them through the day.  Remember, WASTER only.  No sports drinks, juice, pop, or tea.

#3 Class Visits This Week from Principal + SC-Mr. D'Amico (SC) and I will be visiting the kids Social Studies class this week.  I will be talking about expectations in several categories to include dress code, behaviors. attendance, consequences, and lots in between.  Mr. D'Amico will be discussing various aspects of his counseling role and services for kids.

#4 School Pictures-We are having our school pictures in the AM on Sept. 29th.  Soon, we will be sending home information about the pictures.  This year, we have teamed up with Dunlaps for school photos.  We are NOT using Life Touch anymore.  As part of the school tradition, students will get their picture taken to take home as well as having a photo for the school yearbook!

#5 Planners, Attendance, and Tardies-We are using planners this year.  Each student was given one with his or her name on the front.  We use the planners for being out of the class, rest room breaks, and attendance.  Lost or misplaced planners are $5.00.  Please contact the front office and/or send in money if a student needed a new one.

Regarding attendance, as per board policy...guardians can ONLY write 10 parents/guardian excuses.  Dr. Notes, of course, are always excused.  After having 10 notes written, students will be marked unexcused (unless there is a Dr. Note/Court Note/or other outside agency notes.  It is important that students attend school as much as possible as being absent has dramatic effects on the teaching and learning process.

Tardies-Students only get 5 tardies for the entire year before there are consequences.

6 Tardies = 1 detention

9 Tardies = 2 detentions

12 Tardies = In School Suspension or Saturday School and referral to the Absence Intervention Team/possible referral to juvenile court

Summer Edition

[Week of June 2022]

#1 Finishing The Year -Right now, we are working to on summer school for students who need to pass a class that was failed.  We are also looking at schedules and building adjustments including rooms.  Students will get schedules at our opening day (info found on upcoming events).

#2 Preparing Rooms/Changes-Rooms are beings deep-cleaned and floors are being stripped and waxed.  Our custodians are great and really put elbow grease into cleaning and prepping the rooms.  We are also prepping for any staff changes and trainings that go along with a new position or a new role.

#3 Planning for Next Year-We are looking at our school day and procedures that need adjusted or shifted.  We have a few new classes as well as a new approach that does not have blocked ELA/Math classes.  We are also planning on bringing back the Warrior Cafe as part of our reward system (PBIS).  We are adding a transition class for incoming 5th graders in order to ease them into the big changes of middle school life.  5th graders will all have 'Warrior Way' the first semester as part of their electives.  This class and approach is a proactive approach.  We are excited about next year.
