Jim's Way to Make Canopies

JIM'S WAY TO MAKE CANOPIES - Jim Jorgensen

I thought I would forward these photos in case some of the members have as much trouble as I do with making canopies. I like to build from plans, and as a result, have always avoided subjects that require a molded canopy. I have tried vacu-forming and plunge molding in the past without much success, and with a ton of wasted material, while this method (which I heard about on Hip Pocket Aeronautics) I have found to be quick and easy. The most difficult part is carving the mold, but I was able to carve this one in about an hour. The canopy material is clear PVC heat shrink tubing used for lipo battery packs. I purchased a roll, 85 mm x 5 meters long, for under $12 on Amazon which should be good for about 30 or 40 canopies of this size. I use a heat gun on low to shrink the plastic. A hair dryer would probably work just as well. I think the photos are self explanatory, but I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have as to this technique.Â
